I do not know where that thread went, but defragmenting my computer didn't make it that much faster. It is still slow, and the internet gets messed up sometimes. Can anyone help me?

hit start menu then run and then type %temp%
delete everything in there...
then in the box type in msconfig or msconfig.exe dependent on which version of windows u have and go to the startup tab and uncheck everything that you know what it is, and don't want it to start when you start your computer...
This is helpful...maybe sticky it?
Are you sure that your pc isn't infected with malware?
In other words - did you perform a scan recently?

yea, skid has a point, check ur pc for anything u may have... also hit run again and type dxdiag and tell me what processor you have, as in the GHz and the amount of RAM u have... cuz those are indicative of ur pc's speed...

I already reinstalled it twice, and I scan it everyday.

Did you do the thing I said to do?
With the deleting or the temp files and the configuring of your startups?
Plus tell me how much RAM you have...

Was that a typo? I hope youmeant 248MB Cuz otherwise you have like 2GB and Your PC should definitely not be slow... ever...

Actually it could be the quantity of RAM... The amount of RAM should be balanced with the speed of the CPU... In other words... If your CPU is too slow to take advantage of your RAM youve found your problem..

That is very true... Basically your RAM is your speed and your CPU is your gas pedal... also viruses are sugar in your gas tank...

If you have MSN try this one... encarta@conversagent.com .... Now thats an intelligent computer that was built 10-11 months ago.... that would be one of the only computers programmed to respond smartly to certain sentences or words + it controls an encyclopedia...

Could it be windows registry? becouse i had some problem but i have 256 mb or ram and 1.4 ghz processor and when i fixed like 200 errors with nortin, i had no more problems but a undetectable popup that keeps clicking once a long while. Btw anyone ever had that issue b4? if so is there a way to fixing it becouse along with a clicking sound it also minimise my game 2x. I think it could be a spyware or something and yet im using McAfee Total protection -_-

I'm scanning with norton right now. I usually just use BitDefender, but Norton might get some areas that BitDefender can't. All I ususally get are infected cookies, but that's all.

Actually I already have it saved somewhere on my computer, I'll install it and report back.

firebird, how do you know how much RAM your cpu can handle? bc mine sometimes runs slow, not all the time though, and i have a gig. its not spyware, i have several different spyware programs plus zonealarm pro. my cpu is a 1.73 ghz centrino, it came with 512 mb of ram but i upgraded to a gig. and i regularly run the disc cleanup and defrag utilities.

Okay, just so everybody understands about RAM and CPUs....here we go...Your RAM is your Random Access Memory. It saves things you have already opened since your computer has been turned on. The more RAM, the faster things that have already been opened will run. Your CPU is your Central Processing Unit. It runs your RAM. You can have as much RAM as you want, but unless u have a processor that can handle it, the RAM is useless. For instance, For 1GB of RAM, u'd need a processor of about 2.4GHz. Also when ur RAM is in ur pc, its not just the amount, but how its configured. For instance, 1 GB of RAM would be pretty fast if it was comprised of two 512MB chips. If however, it was a 512MB, a 256MB, a 128MB, and 2 64MBs, then it would be much slower. and a 512MB and a 256MB might be slower than the 512MB by itself. If you have multiple, RAMs, it is much better that they match. So maybe fix that stuff before you assume that you have viruses. Also, if you have Norton's newest virus definitions, than you can find almost anything...

i have two 512s. but do you think with my processor i am still taking advantage of some of the extra, or was it a complete waste of money? and does it make a difference since mine is a mobile processor? theyre designed to be more efficient, so the lower clock speed actually compares to supposedly faster desktop processors.

So much bad grammar. But ok. lol, j/k. Anyhoo, I'm not sure what a mobile processor is. But what is its GHz? If you don't know, from the start menu, use the run dialog box, and type "dxdiag". it'll tell you...

its a 1.73 ghz. and by mobile processor i mean the intel centrino. the clock speed is less than a desktop, but its designed to operate efficiently with a laptop's components so its supposed to be roughly equivalent to a desktop. or so i have heard.

I have no Fudgenuggeting idea of what happened to it! It runs on 3GHz for each of its dual cores! It has 2GB RAM! I cannot find any from of virus! It should work fine! I have 250GB left on my hard drive. WTH is up with this thing? I'm going to call gateway tomarow so they can tell me. If they can't, I smell a law suite! Lol, no just kidding about that part, but I HAVE TO get this fixed.

I used BitDefender, Norton, and Searchbot. :mad2:
I uninstalled BitDefender, and it seems a little faster. IDK if that was it... mayeb just maybe....
