View Full Version : Trying to get FLAWLESS epsxe sound emulation. Driving me nuts!

Well for the years that I have been emulating psx games with epsxe, I've always known that there have been flaws with the sound effects. I've recently gotten the emulation bug in my again, and have taken many of my favorite games out of retirement to enjoy then once more, but right now I've been re-tweeking with one in particular and I just can't seem to get it 100% right.

The game is FF7 and the only problem I have is getting the sound effects to be spot-on perfect like the original. It's really hard to know just which sound effects are correct and which are muffled, so I found one in particular and I've been using it as a guide for the rest. If this sound effect can be normal, I guess the rest would be. It's the sound played when you strike an enemy in game. And I've been using different video's I find online as the control to try to get it to that. I found this video a good example because at about 4:50, he's attacking something every 3 seconds and you can hear what it's supposed to be over and over in the video:

I'm unable to post a link because of my post count apparently... so do see this video and what the sound is supposed to be, you'll have to paste the "watch ID" right after your own youtube URL. The sound effects I'm referring to start at 4:50 "youtube com /watch?v=ifzVjY3I4C0 "

The emulator of course is epsxe v. 1.6.0, and the sound plugins I've been testing between are these three: ePSXe SPU core 1.5.2. , P.E.Op.S. DSound Audio Driver 1.9 , Pete's DSound Audio Driver 1.15
The primary one and settings I've been using is the 1.9 version DSound driver. I have the boxes "CD DA Sound", "XA sound in MDEC" checked, and in the settings the first four selection boxes I have set for are "1:High, 1:medium, 2:PSX Reverb, 2:Gaussian interpolation" and it seems like no matter what those four things are assigned to, I cant get the sound effect of hitting the enemy to that of what that youtube video or others like it sound like. It comes up a kind of garbled, very unsophisticated sound that is only one note played for a second, rather than the "Ka-chow!" sound it's supposed to be.

I just got a new computer and have had to re-download the games I own back onto this one to check others, but my next one is Castlevania: SOTN and I was attempting to get the sound absolutely perfect because the beautiful sound effects in that game are a huge part of how I feel when I played it again, as I'm sure you guys understand.

So my questions are these:
Do you guys know of more modern sound plugins that have been made for epsxe?
Are there any settings in the ones I have that should be able to fix my problem, if anyone actually knows what the problem is?
And most notably perhaps, if anyone here has their epsxe sound absolutely perfect in emulation to what they know of as real, what plugins did you use and what settings are in those plugins?
Which of the three plugins should one use with a very modern WinXP computer with a modern late 2008 on-board sound card?

I know the issue I'm having isn't too big of a deal since I'm able to actually play the games, but I appologize if I'm wasting anyone's time here with the insignificance. If anyone could help me, I thank you in advance =). Cheers, and happy nostalgia, everyone.

Why epsxe 1.6 and not 1.7?
And have you tried Eternal 1.40 Sound plugin?

please just remember, that it is just an emulator, not the real thing. some games will have problems. a list of games that i have problems w/ : Driver 2, FF7, Abe's Oddysee, Abe's Exoddus, Castlevania-SotN and other games. it's better to have it marked as playable than not at all like Hot Wheels Turbo Racing.

What kind of problem do you have with Castlevania SOTN? 'cause I only seem to have the sound issue (it's not bright clear, but it's ok) and that for some reason when I push 'select' to show the map sometimes it frezees and sometimes it doesn't , oh yeah and I'm using emurayden

defrag your comp ps games run much better after you defrag. when you extract games for some reason comps will scatter the file and that makes it difficult to emulate games properly

Mmmmm...necromancy - I shall help raise this thread and call it george - go! do my bidding!

Also, hitching sound in Innocent Sin - favored sound plugin for epxe 1.7? I used to know but its been over a year since (thougb I also switched to Vista since then, and that by itself really ****ed over my sound card)
