I know, everyone's still so worried like it'll kill ya. Sure, it spread like crazy, but it's no more lethal than any other strain. Thank goodness. There's one coming though that's gonna be 1918 all over again...

On another note anyone seen that app on iphone "swine flu detector" kinda funny. It doesnt really do anything but has places you can tap to make it say yeh or no someone is/isnt infected. Dont buy it!!! Kinda fun though!

The funny thing (if you are in the states) is the only people that have actually DIED from Swine Flu here are, coincidentally, illegal immigrants that came from Mexico. No reported deaths of any citizens have been noted, unless that's changed since the last time I've checked.

Yeah I heard a lot about those of Mexican blood being counter-vulnerable to it.

In my state a few schools were actually closed, but before ours was the local district stopped closing any schools. In our case an immeasurably small amount of students caught "Swine Flu" that also had to be sent home. I never caught it though, maybe in this case I'm actually immune for being vulnerable.

I heard a New York Vice Principal died from it. Most that died from swine flu had other illness besides the swine flu. I personally think they made a big deal out of it.

My Friend Had Swine Flu, And Her Boyfriend Did Too.
They Said It Was Much Worse Then The Normal Flu, But It's Not As Bad As They Would Of Thought.

That worms in the porkchops thing is bull****, just a knock off of the maggots spawning from Porkchops after u pour coke on it, which i guess morphed into that.

It's just a bad lie spread by jews. I'M NOT kidding....

Don't let a Youtube vid tell you otherwise. YouTube isn't the truth wrapped up in booty shaking vids and kids wetting themselves on Halo 3.

Most of the illnesses people freak out about are crap but I can't say too much because I use all of them to get out class. Unfortunately private colleges (at least I'm told all do I've only gone to one) grade 90% based on attendance.

That's kinda their job to emphasize everything viney....

Kinda would be pointless to set up a News Station and then just talk about sick puppies n micheal jackson stories n such.

So im assuming your going to try to critisise my every post, fair enough :) I think its nice to be judged once in awhile.
I didnt say it wasnt, but alot of people freak out and turn it something bigger than it is, thats all. And the news is very influencual (if thats how you spell it lol)

I wasn't attacking, i had meant to comment on this earlier but i couldn't double-post.

You judged every news station their is, but that's the problem.

If they aren't to take anything seriously? What is their job?

Explain to me wtf it is for them to do?

It's not their fault ppl freak out. I see ppl freaking out everyday, and that's just in online games -.-.

Well it depends on what the news company is, if you get me. Certain papers cover different things or lets say pay attention towards what will sell. Yeah sure theyre job is to tell us whats going on, but sometimes it emphasised more than it should be. Cmon how many people have actually caught swine flu and died compared to the amount that live? It's not entirely there fault, but they dont have to make it into such a big hype, swine flu isnt a big matter imo

I understand the matter, they don't need to use up to 4 anchormen or women to tell us the facts, that is over emphasizing, plus they grab and hold unto whatever is hot and keep it far beyond it's lengths, but also understand that was thought to be problem, that most news stations weren't running ENOUGH on the shows.

That is kinda wierd to look at it like that, but more ppl are complaining there isn't enough emphasizing on actual news, just more of the Popmedia.

I'm pretty sure advertisers aswell as the fundings correspond to what they can actually put out, versus how long to run it.

That is my problem.

In the words of the late great Cronkite "Our job is only to hold up the mirror - to tell and show the public what has happened."

It's also scary to know ppl nowadays are getting their news form The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, which are funny great programs, but should never be viewed upon as actually the truth.

I think the swine flu is over exaggerated. When it was first discovered it was a huge pandemic that was a threat to all western hemisphere because apparently its kill rate is over the roof.

Soon enough all the people I know get a diagnosis of swine flu and they are completely fine.

All swine flu is a big fuss and to me it does not help the medias credibility.

I've known several people that have gotten extremely sick with swine flu, but they recovered in a week or two. No one I know has died from it. Media researchers dug up information on the Influenza Epidemic of 1918 and decided they could adapt it to modern times, claiming it was happening again for the sake of sensationalism.

That particular epidemic killed 50 million people, but they also didn't bathe, had no access to running water or soap, and lacked other basic sanitation designed to thwart the spread of disease. To even suggest it could happen again is inciting a riot.

Isn't that illegal? Why do we tolerate the media being so godawful in this country? Every six months the media comes up with a new armageddon scenario that - at least according to them - will kill you very, very soon. The absurdity lost it's comic value several years ago.

I wish they'd just shut up, lie to me about the weather as usual, and get a real job like the rest of the world.

All in all this is the world filtering itself out. There is just to many freakin people on this earth. And when the world reaches it's max it tends to even itself out with a hurricane or an epidemic.

But, anyway It will take who it wants and leave who needs to be.

Aw, don't be so hard on the media guys. I know I do it too sometimes, but give them a break. People have been saying for thousands of years the world will end in 2012 because the Mayans said do. The media is just trying to come up with a good reason now that it's so close.

I go back and forth on the overpopulation issue. If we continue to multiply at our current rate we'll destabilize the ecosystem in only a few generations, but on the other hand it's hard to justify billions of people dying, even if it is for the greater good. The world is already facing the greatest food crisis in recorded history. Even if the swine flu wiped out a third of the human race it may not be enough to steer us off the path to extinction.

There's always cannibalism, of course, but as soon as anyone mentions that everyone assumes they're trolling. Eating the dead would put a significant dent in world hunger as agricultural scientists are busy lying about how soon they'll have the next green revolution ready. I don't really want to eat my nasty dirty neighbors, though, so there has to be another answer.

If we're extremely lucky maybe 2012 will bring about a popular resurgence of the Heaven's Gate cult, and half the planet will commit suicide. Wars are expensive and messy, so we can't really go down that route. A fancy disease would work, but swine flu isn't doing the trick yet. SARS was a failure, as was bird flu. We need something old school.

Maybe small pox will save the day. The CDC still has that locked up somewhere, don't they? I sure hope so.

For the record, I'm more likely to accept dialogue spoken by members of Team Rocket as breaking news than anything spoken by the US media. At some point the news stopped being news and became an episode of Cops. No offense to Cops, of course.

Well they're gonna say what's gonna make you watch. Unfortunately it's like the South Park episode where they create "Sexy Action News" instead of their normal school news show because lying about the news gets viewers to watch. These people actually PRAY that something horrible will happen to the rest of us so they can actually get a real, violent story and won't have to lie about one. Unfortunately some people live by it. My roommate is Chinese, and all he talked about for a week was how "H1N1 is worse than SARs." Poor *******.

Well a few towns away, here about 2 weeks ago a 12 year old boy died from the swine flu. Then again, it said it went to his heart, but he had symptoms of this swine flu. its weird, I dunno what to believe, I know that if I get seriously sick anytime soon, I will go to a doctor, just to be safe.

i recently was looking into world disasters and incidents of such and watched news reports, and compared the hindenburg incident report to 9/11, and noticed how much more suppressed the people on 9/11 had to act using "oh my goodness" as if they weren't allowed to show emotion, media is very very sad, but with all the lies its actually sometimes bearable to watch :p

My uncle's business is in NYC. I was visiting him when the towers fell. What ended up on TV may have been upsetting to watch, but it didn't even begin to convey an iota of the horror unfolding in the street.

The media may have done a disservice to history by airing a "polite" version of the catastrophe, but they did the nation an enormous favor. Everyone had a breakdown. Even if you covered your ears and hid inside, it wasn't enough to block out the screaming, the crying, and the sirens. I'm still not comfortable thinking about it, and I probably never will be. It felt like the end of the world, and you can't put that on TV. I hate censorship, and what I'm about to say makes me a hypocrite, but I don't care.

Peoples' actual reaction to 9/11 didn't belong on the news. It was too personal. It would've been undignified and disrespectful to record and air those images. Nothing good could've come of it.

And I know we send reporters to war-torn nations and do precisely that to them. We take their suffering and immortalize it on film for the sake of posterity or "the truth." If the US media had done that to the citizens of NYC, I would've gone berserk - literally. There would've been a riot from coast to coast.

I bash the media a lot, but I think they did the right thing on 9/11. Some things are too upsetting to broadcast in prime time HD, even if it's true.

I have avoided swine flu so far, thank god. I hope there won't be any second waves.

Durgha
02-02-2010, 03:42 AM
Hope sadly doesn't have much to do with it. It's an issue of how these viruses behave, and that hasn't changed much in all of recorded history. The infamous 1918 influenza pandemic didn't start wiping out large chunks of humanity until mid 1919 and early 1920.

If the pattern holds true, people won't start dropping dead in droves from H1N1 until next year at the earliest. The second wave is inevitable. The death count, however, isn't.

Arguably avoiding the virus is one of the worst things you can do. If you don't develop some antibodies now, you're putting yourself at significant risk when a vaccine-resistant strain of the virus shows up next year.

Of course I'm not a doctor so no one should listen to me, but it's a myth that getting sick makes you inherently weaker to disease. In the case of the flu, a mild case actually makes you resilient to future exposure of much more dangerous variations.

So go get sick. Lick a doorknob, and maybe you'll live to see 2012.

Personally, I'm curious about where that myth started. How in the way that science teaches us "You body needs antibodies" which is what antivirals are supposed to do got mixed up with "Avoid illness".

Not to mention people fail to see that antivirals are just genetically altered versions of the ACTUAL virus. They WILL make you sick HOWEVER they will make you stronger if the "real deal" comes around to beat on you. That is their point.

Also, what's with this paranoid anyway? The "death toll" is only cause people are dumb. Viral infection means you fight the symptoms that might "hurt/kill" and simply wait it out. This means people who can't "wait it out" are the ones generally at threat.... which ain't us.

When sick, stay home from work/school and REST! Drink your damn fluids and keep your fever down and... OMG you wont die! :O

Flu is flu is flu.

I had the swine flu last year, and I tell you; it seriously blows. I couldn't walk, let alone eat at all. My eyes were burning and was about to fall out of my head and don't even get me started about the body aches. I've had the regular flu before and the swine flu was much worse. I remember how my mom had to carry me to the hospital because I couldn't walk at all and everyone was staring at me and I got the dirtiest looks of my life xD. But seriously, it's a lot more painful than you guys think. I probably got it worse than some people (and some people probably got it worse than me) but it sucked majorly.
It's not worth making a huge deal about, but it's certainly something you want to avoid.

MikeB214
03-16-2010, 10:37 AM
Yeah, swine flu sucked ***. It's basically regular flu with vomiting and diarrhea, really, except that there have been cases of small children not accustom to illness dying from it. I couldn't move, didn't have the energy to even try and speak, it was rough. I drank pretty heavily the night before so I thought I woke up with the worst hang-over in the history of man. lol But on the media thing, I don't know what the big hype about H1N1 is all about. I mean, swine flu had an outburst back in '97, what's the big deal about a virus coming back, that's what they do. It would be like if the media freaked out every winter about colds.
