Emulating Dreamcast With Chankast .25

Get Chankast .25 here: http://www.chanka.org/

Step 1:First make sure you have Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools installed for mounting the Rom image.

Step 2:Aquire both Bios files DC_Bios.bin and DC_Flash.bin. Paste these under the main directory for Chankast. www.google.com for those.

Step 3:Run Chankast. Go to Options. Configure your Virtual Drive.

Step 4:Now that your Virtual Drive is set, Run the Emulator. Let it drop back to the Dreamcast Dashboard and select File. Once in File delete the red x.

Step 5:Exit Chankast. Mount your image. Then go to run in Chankast.

Some other things you should know, is that any Capcom game needs the Capcom hack.

To get some extra Frames Enable the Higher Priority Option.(This can make certain games crash like Sonic Adventure.)

Also for extra Frames you can hit the - and + buttons to Decrease or Increase Frames.

Lastly, if a game gives you the following message:

Then you must change the AV Cable type in Options like so:

It will probably run kind of wierd with the NTSC Cable type but its better than nothing.

Well, I would say you definately could if you got a new graphics card. But I think it will still run anyway. Just might be a bit slow.

There could be a thing where someone downloaded it, but added a virus and put that file on his site...i think, unless you got it from download.com...if you got it from limewire, your dumb

i have D-tools and mounted sonic adventures to it but it won't play...it has that dreamcast intro and it takes me to the date/time setting alot, for first time users and it also takes me to the main menu for dreemcast

When I run chankast the graphics seems fine expect all the text is missing. I cannot get any games to run and I have no idea why. Does anybody know what's causing this problem and how to fix it?

i have the same problem, no text only a gray screen the spiral dosent show up, but MvC2 just goes to this blue and black screen.

I think it's because I have an integrated Intel graphics card. From what I hear, Chankast doesn't work well with integrated cards. What is your graphics card?

Wrong Region Rom. Your Bios file for Chankast doesnt match the rom youve got. Chankast is lame with the Bios files. You can only use 1 Bios file, unless you have Chankast installed in multiple folders, each one with a different Bios. Basically, your solution is to find the matching Region for your rom.

Chankast is Notorious for this on MANY titles.
I wold have to say it's the Emulator usually, not the image.

Thre reason I say this, is 99.9% of the time chankast does this, I can burn the image to CD-R using alcohol 120%, and the CD-R will play perfectly on my actual Dreamcst console!

Hey I have a PSX-Usb converter but I'm not too sure how to calibrate it. Can someone help me? IDK what the r-zaxis and the other stuff is. I also don't really know how to use it on the Dreamcast because dreamcast controllers only have one analog. And to those other people who tried running the actualy game on your pc it won't work. Dreamcast games aren't CD-Rom, they're GD-Rom. It's basically the same except the space between the lines that the laser has to read is a lot smaller, and normal CD-Rom lasers can't read them.

Also, I have the Sonic Adventure 2 rom. Does anyone else have this? It runs really ****ty for me, like in slow motion almost, but the sound works fine.

I've got a SA2 back up, and it wont play on my Dreamcast, but will from a virtual drive on chankast, but theres a graphically problem. In Sonics first stage going down the street, you get a reflected wall on the screen so you cant see anything in front of you. Its ok on flat planes but thats not much use.

Yes, you can. You have to Configure your Rom drive in Chankast's Options. I don't recommend doing this though. It really slows the Emulation speed down.

The files I got are all like this

My question is what do I do with these files to get it to work on Chankast?

Did you extract it and it showed those files?
If so, you need to leave the image file unzipped, and mount it in Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools.

Otherwise, extract the .001 file if you can. You should then get a .iso, .cdi, or .mdf file.

Got chancast v 0.25 ,both bios and I'm got alcohol 120 because of the windows vista. When i start chancast i get a grey screen and a little red dot
bounces on the dreamcast letters making them appear.tried to run airforce

For example :
I downloaded Evolution 2.7z 0.001 and Evolution 2.7z 0.002

it was an unzipped file , it showed as 001 file and 002 file , i tried to mount it , but chankast would onlyshow it in music player . Can't play .

I put both the bios and flash in the same folder I extracted chankast too.
It worked for me....:)

My problem is that I am trying to set up my PC to use a XB360 controller and it is a guessing game as to which button does what.

My problem number 2 is that when I try to play Vigilante 8 I end up at the cd music screen and when I go to the play option it says "Please insert disk"...:skep:

is ther any way to edit the bios? becaus somehow my dumb**s dumped it with a spanish default language so now every time i load chankast the games are in spanish! i changed the language in the options menu of the "dreamcast" but it obviously doesnt save changes becaus everything goes back when i restart the emulator...
p.s. my dreamcast is in a different state now becaus i loaned it to my bro so i cant just dump another 1.

so i took kameo's advice and downloaded demul (which is already anoying the heck out of me lol) but im having some issues setting it up. my main issue right now is whenever i try to start the rom i get an eror message saying "unable to make poligon shader" and the emulator closes. i asume this is becaus im missing a proper grafix plugin so if some 1 could point me in the direction of what i need or just tell me what i have to do to fix it i would greatly apreciate it.

I am also trying to run demul32 (verson 0.5.3) and I've configured bios, plugins, gd-rom emulation, etc. However, when I attempt to start the emulator, it says "Failed to open dc.zip" and doesn't emulate. I've run a search on my pc and failed to find a "dc.zip" (no wonder it can't open it). This begs the question, where the hell do I find this magic file at? It doesn't unpack when I installed the program so what gives?

Of course, this wouldn't be an issue if I could get chancast to work. Every rom I've tried to run in it (yes, from daemontools) ends up taking me to the music player. Not that the music player works since--like a previous poster-- the sound is totally screwy. When I select "play game" it says "insert game disc." :mad2:

[EDIT]: I stuck my bios into an archive named dc.zip and renamed them to match what Demul looks for. Surprisingly it runs, but I'm now having the same problem with Demul that I was having with Chancast. "Insert game disc." I'm beginning to think that no one has this working and is only saying they have to avoid admitting they've wasted this much time trying.

[EDIT2]: Realized I needed a bootdisk to run games that aren't selfboot (none of the cdi games from Coolrom's DC list are selfboot? Utopia is...). Using Demul, I got utopia to run, and I'm staring at Rudolph the red-nosed raindeer. Changing the disc image in Demul's gd-rom plugin either turns the raindeer reflective and has a rotating cd with some dude screaming on the label, or does absolutely nothing. W. T. F.

CDI format images are disc juggler disc images and work pretty much the same as iso's, but the format is perfect for burning dreamcast games.

I believe I have the only DC game on here that works on nullDC unmounted. The rest are self boot which is differen't from strait CDI.

You can config your keyboard, but I don't recommend it. There are some games you just flat won't be able to play right with keys. I use my xbox 360 controller for everything.

OK. I'm confused. Can you use the keyboard or not?
I've loaded it up and it says to enter date and time. I try pressing the up key, down key, all the keys basically, but nothing works.
I go to options and Configure Controls, but no pop-up box appears.
I've basically tried everything I can think of but the keys won't work.
Someone said you can configure the keys but how do I do that, if I can't navigate anywhere??
It's frustrating and I know I can go buy a controller but I wanted to play the emulator now.

I got the emu to boot and start to run I deleted the red x and then restarted the emu and it wont do anything it says i need to insert a disk when it boots it comes up as if it was playing a music cd what do i do i mean i spent 5hrs trying to find the bin files that were in english let me know how to fix this please for the love of the dc

Others before me have posted about the same problem I'm having, but no one so far has provided an answer.

Chankast Alpha v0.25 is running, using an Xbox 360 controller. BIOS file is in the same folder as Chankast. I've got a dozen or so ROMS that I can't get to load. I downloaded them as .rar files, and extracted them to .cdi. Daemon works no problem mounting the .cdi, and Chankast gives me a message "Please wait while disc is being checked".

However, when I press "play" in Chankast, I get the message "Please insert game disc".

If I reset Chankast, it starts up normally, but goes straight to the music menu.

Someone please provide some input/help. Since this thread is only checked every month or so, I'll check back in 30 days to see if I got a response...

Yes it would, i have never been able to get DC emus to work, but i don know you can do that, in order to play the games as well.

So. I registered here because I really need some help and it´s hard as hell to find something via google x_X

I downloaded Dead or Alice 2 and got a bin and a cue file out of it. Plus, that´s why I´m in this thread, I downloaded Chankast .25 alpha.
I tried everything on the first post. But somehow the emulator does not recognize the rom. Which one should I use? The bin? Not working. I even tried to convert the bin into an Iso using " winBIN2ISO". But the iso does not want to work either. What should I do?

i'm having trouble using a game controller on chankast. ive tried with a ps1 style pc pad and also an xbox pad and neither seem to be supported by the emulator. they work, but the key mapping is all wrong. any ideas?

ive tried it out but every time crankast crashes on my, ive even used utopia 1.1, i have the game disk but i cant figure it out :confused:

I think Chankast is pretty much outdated. Use NullDC (http://code.google.com/p/nulldc/) instead, which is still being developed as of today.

I haven't had any problems running any games on NullDC @ full speed.
Plus gfx and sound emulation is perfect or near-perfect for most of the games I've tried.

Soo..Give it a try.

Just don't forget to copy your DC BIOS and DC FLASH BIOS in the "data" folder
of NullDC and name them "dc_boot.bin" and "dc_flash.bin" respectively or the emulator WON'T START.
