This thread is for discuassing the GTA clones which have been populating the gaming scene for a while now. What do you think of them? Are they any good? Do you like the 'GTA formula'?

I'll make a list of some I know. Tell me if I missed any.

-Driv3r
-Driver: Parallel Lines
-The Simpsons: Hit and Run
-Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction
-The Godfather
-Mafia
-True Crime:L.A.
-True Crime:New York

possible spoilers

I think some of the GTA clones are cool. I like the 'go anywhere, do anything' formula. Mercenaries had some good gimmicks like the ability to tear down buildings, sink ships, and destroy bridges, which was made even more realistic by the fact that some do not come back if you destroy them and save.

I didn't like The Simpson: Hit and Run too much because of its lack luster gameplay. After you complete the missions, all there is left to do is drive around and collect some stuff, but the cities are sort of linear and seem to be going in a path, rather than having multiple ways to go at one time. You are able to do a pathetic-looking kick attack, which can be used to attack people. When you do this, all that happens is the person falls to the ground like some pole while flailing about and spouting dialogue. If you do it enough, the police will come after you. If you aren't in a car, you may be hit by a police car going in excess of 100 mph and go flying in the other direction for a good 500 yards, which is fun to watch, but only for a second or two. The hidden goodies are pretty interesting, but eventually find yourself aimlessly wandering/driving with nothing to do. The game becomes terribly boring when this happens.

The last two games in the Driver series were average at best. In my opinion, the cars go way too slow to be any fun. The Film Editor is fun until you realize all you can do is film the same car chases/gun fights over and over. I think that the creators' obsession with Iggy Pop and other 70's music is kinda creepy. It seems that they killed off your character from the first three games. He could come back, though. I get the feeling that Driver gives you move than enough space to play around in, but the space is bland and you don't have the means to fully enjoy it. A helicopter or two would make sight seeing much more fun.

Yeah I tend to like them. The ones I dont like though I pretty much think that they are piles of #$%^. Like the Drivers and Mafia. That Simpsons game is terrible also.

I added them. I liked True Crime:L.A. (Nick Kang is NUTS) and the city is HUGE. One of my favorite things to do was to go on the highway with a street racer and shoot the tailpipes of the cars (thereby blowing them into the air). Great fun to be had there, and the cars were pretty fast. The cobat system was pretty cool, as well. I never played NY.

NY is real buggy so people give it a bunch of crap. But I found it to be fun still.
The first one I really liked up until the end where you fight Zombies and creatures. That just didnt make any sense to me.

Yeah, that was weird, like when you fought the dragon and concubines in that hidden place in the restaurant. I loved it when I randomly walked up to a guy in a crowd and frisked him and he had contraband. Although, sometimes, I'd just frisk anybody just for the heck of it. In my first playthrough, I just failed every single mission right till the end to see what would happen. It's amazing how they think of an excuse for you to survive for every mission when you fail it.

I hear NY was terrible on the Xbox because of glitches.

Yeah it is Glitchy, but I wouldnt say its unplayable. People are to harsh on stuff sometimes. I found it to be fun somewhat.

You guys forgot the best GTA clone. Jak 3! That game is pretty cool, I think Jak 2 also has somewhat of a GTA clone, but I don't remember.

Weird, some people I've met love the Getaway, though I've never played it myself.

Jak 3? What is that about? How is it a GTA clone? I always thought that Jak was just a violent Crash Bandicoot clone, if that makes sense.

On Jack and Daxter you just go around in different levels ( Through one big level outside of all the others. ) Lik there's the main city, and from there you can go to all the levels outside of the city, get it? Well on Jak 2 they started making the game more like GTA by making an actual city, making you able to jack cars, and having guns. On the third one they did pretty much what they did on the second one, but enhanced it( AKA more guns ).

So, Jak is a bad guy? What is the story? And by 'main city,' you mean overworld.

IDK what an overworld is, but The main level is sort of like the castle is in Super Mario 64. The story goes something like this;

Jack and Daxter

Jack's friend Daxter gets turned into a furry creature, and you have to get him back to normal.
You also need to save the world, and some other stuff that's not important.

Jak 2

Jak gets thrown in prison.
Jak has experiments done on him.
Jak breaks out after two years.
He tries to get revenge.

Jak 3

I don't remember about it really, but I do remember that you find out the great secret of the Precursors and find out about Daxter's gift. That is at the end of the game though.

I didn't spoil anything, I just said the first 5 minutes of gameplay, the rest is up to you guys.

An overworld is the castle in Mario 64. It is a hub where you can travel around between stages and the like.
Games that do not have an overworld usually have a 'stage select' menu, where you do not have to travel around, you just pick a stage and you are there, like Halo.
