View Full Version : The TV - A rant by Kurt

You know what I hate? Modern television. Doesn't matter the channel, doesn't matter the country. Almost all media is biased, and our (America's) media is probably one of the worst, or at least the worst for such a big country. Our newscasts are biased, our TV shows are aimed towards total idiots, Conan O'Brien isn't on enough, and Tech Tv went to Tech Hell. Now, I'm not saying modern television is worse than, say, Kim Jong-il or Michael Jackson. But it is pretty terrible.

Take, for example, Deal or No Deal. What kind of total idiot finds that show engrossing? It's not remotely clever, it's not remotely inventive, it's not remotely watchable. It's just something stuck on the air by NBC (I think) to fill airtime because they couldn't find enough ****ty drama shows. I want to punch the host for that show in the face and make him eat his own arms.

Another suckfest would have to be Law And Order. I know some people like that crap, but it annoys the hell out of me. Maybe I'm anti-television, but it doesn't matter. I used to watch TV shows like this as a kid, until I realized that THEY ALL SUCK.

I used to like Nickelodeon (sp?). I used to like their shows like Pete and Pete, their older things. But now, they have, and I say this respectfully, gone completely to hell. Spongebob Squarepants used to be a fairly entertaining show, but early in their 3rd season something happened. All the writers started immediately and efficiently sucking. Yet, Nick STILL AIRS THOSE TERRIBLE EPISODES. I know for a fact that they have gotten huge amounts of hate mail violently requesting Spongebob to be taken off the air by the adults who watch the show (about 2/3rds of the watchers are 18 or older). Hell, who am I kidding. We all knew Nick sucked after Ren and Stimpy went off the air.
Likewise, the same has happened to Cartoon Network. They used to have shows like Two Stupid Dogs (never that good, but invented some excellent heavily-copied gags), Cow and Chicken, and some others that I can't remember at the moment. Best of all, they used to have a writer named Genndy Tartakovsky, who did some truly excellent work on some shows like Dexter's Lab. I never watched much of this channel as a kid, but the time I spent watching it is fondly remembered. I turned the TV on a while ago to Cartoon Network and my eyes shriveled up, retreating back into their sockets, stricken by fear.

And yet, TV is a huge industry. Ads from TV are everywhere you look, like those little stickers they put on stuff nobody would ever want to buy that says "AS SEEN ON TV!" and it makes you want to burn the store you found it in down. TV commercials generate huge revenue for places like Burger King and McDonalds, all because all these modern TV-watching, easily entertained, tardsacks can't tell the difference between their own opinion and a TV commercial. It's like the big companies, by putting SO MANY ads on television, are saying: "Hey! Smaller companies! If you pay to put ads on TV, you might someday be as rich as us!". Of course, it works, and TV channels air even more commercials.

I have no idea what just happened.

By the way, I really don't expect anyone to agree with me or even read this. If you even check it out in the slightest, you can tell me what you think or something.

I agree. I used to watch every new episode that came on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network before. Shows like the old Rugrats, Dexter's Laboratory, Doug, Cow and Chicken, Rocko's Modern Life, and others were always a joy to watch and cleverly programmed. Now, with shows like My Gym Partner's A Monkey, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, All Grown Up, and Winx Club (shut up, you!), everything is the same tasteless crap. I'd rather spend my time replaying a (good) game than watch a brand spankin' (not that spankin' perv) new episode of these new cartoons.

And, what's with these people putting kissing and love a.k.a. mushy stuff in cartoons and other kids shows? Man, I don't wanna see that. That's just weird, watching your favorite cartoon characters getting all mushy over a girl or guy. If you are a little kid watching this (very likely) you're gonna be thinking 'WHAT THE HOLY ****???" troughout the whole episode. Is that there to teach kids? Well, that probably won't be the case if they are too disgusted to watch the show ever again. Some people don't care or like it, but I don't. I'm talking about kids shows like the cartoons on Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, Toon Disney, and Nicktoons. Or maybe I'm just stupid. Yet, these shows are sometimes the bane of parents who are too shy to 'talk' to their kids about that thing that makes people. For example, you could be watching a cartoon with your kid, and the cartoon might be innocent, and then the subject makes a passing reference or something as to where babies come from. Your kid(s) turn around and ask you the same thing. Well, I suppose you could shake them off and say that you'll tell them when they're older, but you shouldn't have to. I suppose cartoons may be straying into controversial issues to try to squeeze out the last of the show's appeal with shock factor, which is pretty pathetic on a kid's show. I'm saying this based on the idea that parents don't like to tell their kids such stuff at the age of 6. It just irks me, yo.

I remember back when i was i Kid the show were Action and Adeventure, now in day there aren't many that is one that aren't really weird. doesn't any one remember the good kid shows?

While you guys make some good points, something CM said is bugging me. Do you actually thing Rugrats is well-written? No offense or anything, but I *always* found that show to be dull, badly written, and overhyped.

Well, chaos master was little, and it was a cartoon, so yea. chaos master doesn't know if he still likes it. chaos master's standards as a child were low, so he liked it. chaos master liked most shows better, but Rugrats was a classic to him.

Well that is a big peom. I'll read it later though. What I do think about television is that it's totally cool! And also totally retarded at the same time. It helps people learn things, know the weather, and see what people in China look like. It also fills people's heads up with bull**** that makes them do dumbass things. So it's good and bad, all depends on how you look at it.

Those ****ing idiots oughta get shot for making that illogical bull**** like Fairly Oddparents and such. The only cartoon they did make that wasn't ****ed up was Spongebob Squarepants, a classic entertainment.

TV is freakin lame I never watch it. The only show I would even think about watching would be South Park, but I just Download the episodes and burn them to DVD anyway thnx to Mr.Twig. I feel like I get dumber everytime I see commercials these days. Commercials are mind-numbingly retarded.

Well there is The Simpsons, Family guy, South park, Every body hates Chris, Deadliest catch, The war @ home, Trailer park boys (not sure if you guys get it in the states), and Father ted, which is an old show but I never watched it before so it is new to me and it is as funny as hell.

That is basically all that is good on T.v with the exception of the odd bugs bunny and tweety show re-runs.

I am just shocked that you would enjoy Spongebob. I think Invader Zim was better than Spongebob. The Spongebob Movie wasn't that great.

Yes, commercials are retarded these days. There are things like people dancing about coffee, singing about yogurt, wailing about toothpicks (okay, I made that one up) and showing graphic cartoons of bears pooping on trees with brand name toilet paper. Some are okay.

The funny commercials are o.k but other than that I feel like banging my head off the wall just for something to do when the crappy commercials come on.

All those shows like american idol and so you think you can dance suck b***s. I really don't enjoy watching full grown men prance around a stage, then ball their eyes out when they finally get someone with half a brain to tell them that they suck donkey di*k. I have 3 words for those losers "get a life".

Some are okay. The first 2.9 seasons (or so) of Sponebob were excellent, but after that everything sucked, including the movie. The movie was like taking the 6 worst episodes they could think of and ramming them up into a big ball of ****ty, ****ty writing.

Anyway, I hate all commercials as of now. Bears sicken me.

I mainly watch the NFL Network, HBO Boxing and I'll get the UFC Pay for views if they have some good matches lined up. And of course I haven't missed a Pittsburgh Steelers football game for the past 30 years.
The only show I really watched and kept up with was The Sopranos and even that got kind of boring after a while.
