View Full Version : Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
My favorite Capcom fighting game (even over MvsC2) would have to be SFIII: 3rd Strike. I know a lot of people are partial to the Alpha series, but I like the 3rd strike engine, it's less frantic and more strategy-oriented, and not as technical as the KOF series, which is a big plus to me. The parry system is easy to use but hard to master, and it's just useful enough to be required if you want to be a good player. If Capcom games were weapons, this game would be an F-14.
I'll post some of my favorite characters and what I like or dislike about the game and maybe a vid or two in a bit.

I agree, best Street Fighter in my opinion, I'll take Third Strike over Alpha any day of the week.
I agree, best Street Fighter in my opinion, I'll take Third Strike over Alpha any day of the week.Alpha 3 is actually a fun game because no one is really good at it, so all the matches are just frantic button mashing and three-hit combos. This game is far superior, though. It's also a vast improvement over the first two installments of Street Fighter 3.

It's not that I think Alpha isn't fun, it's just that im a much bigger fan of Third Strike, plus I think Third Srike requires much more skill than any other typical fighter.
I think Third Srike requires much more skill than any other typical fighter.Much more skill indeed, because it lacks the typical tier bull**** that seems to be associated with most fighting games. Sure, there are some unplayable characters, but the playable to unplayable ratio is very high. I've seen guys that are great with Hugo, good Ken players, a guy taking Ryu into the championship finals, an Oro player (uru in japan?) beating a whole team of 3 guys, and lots of stuff like that.

I'm still tryin to master the parrying system, The highest parry I've gotten was against dudley's Rocket Punch Super Art.
I'm still tryin to master the parrying system, The highest parry I've gotten was against dudley's Rocket Punch Super Art.I can parry some combos, but I think the best I've done is parry Ken's Shoryuken super for probably 3/4ths of the length of it. Also, I once parried Hugo's Hammer move halfway in the air, then I fell down and he killed me.

I actually can parry that Super Art, I usually try to watch for that small flash of light that happens when you parry.
I actually can parry that Super Art, I usually try to watch for that small flash of light that happens when you parry. It's (probably) not that hard to parry, it's just that I never actually owned the console port, so I only played at the arcades, where all the Ken players could easily combo into it from an MP. I only fight player versus player, so I've never done any super-ridiculous parrying against the AI.

Ah i see, me and a couple of my friends still play the game, mainly cause we have the arcade machine at my job. We still play it more on the dreamcast just because its more accesible though.

I'm downloading the ISO of the Dreamcast version as we speak... is it any good compared to the arcade?

YES, the dreamcast version is great, the Iso your getting, if its the same as the one I have, does tend to make the music skip every so often, although it might not be the same iso that I downloaded, since the one I got had Snk Vs. Capcom, MvC2, and Third Strike on the Disk.

The game says it will be done in exactly 26 minutes and 24 seconds. The filesize isn't as big as I would have thought.

Yea the game does suck ive only played it once for like a minute and that was to see if the iso worked with all of the games.
Just curious: What's everyone's favorite character(s)?

My favorite character is Akuma, but I also use Remy, Ryu, and Elena.
My favorite character is Akuma, but I also use Remy, Ryu, and Elena.I like Remy, Dudley and Ken. I don't care for anyone else, because I know virtually all of Dudley's moveset, and am experienced enough with Remy and Ken that I don't feel any immediate need to learn any new characters. I should try, though; Hugo looks pretty fun.

My favorite thing to do with Dudley is his taunt, the rose can knock someone out of the air or cancel out a super if it hits.

After a knockdown, right before your opponent gets up, use the taunt. It will score you almost a second, and in that time you can hit a Super Art (or Dudley's Shoryuken-esque uppercut) if your opponent isn't blocking.

My favorite thing to do with Akuma is against characters that like to stay in the air like Ibuki, and Oro. I'll use his thunder fist and ruin there Hp since even blocking only stops 25% of the damage it causes.

He's also one of my favorite characters, right after Remy. Akuma is a little too short-range for me, and his kicks seem to have a slight hangtime that makes him unfavorable in the air. I'm not sure about the last one, though, because I usually don't play with him.

What aren't you sure about?
What aren't you sure about? The HK and MK midair hangtime. It seems like every time I try to come down on a character from midair, they just uppercut me or hit me with a kick or a super because I'm still in the air. I could just suck as Akuma, though.

Oh ok, in the air if you play as akuma you have an almost ultimate defense, his air fireball and his thrust kick take priority over almost every other move except for a like the dragon punch and elena's flip kick for example.

Well, most characters that can Shoryuken will do so as soon as Akuma gets within air range, just out of paranoia, but his fireball has good priority against the others, as far as I know.

Yea most people do shoryuken, just out of habit but in Third Strike I've noticed more people trying to parry the fireball, and trying to low block his thrust kick which doesn't stop its damage since it hits high.

Think my favorite parry in the game is against yun, his roll attack all low parrys and then straight into a raging demons.

Thats strange, I've never seen anyone who uses Yunonly use his low kicks. Strange.
Thats strange, I've never seen anyone who uses Yunonly use his low kicks. Strange.I think he does it either because
A. it's kind of annoying
B. he wants to prove he can beat everyone else even with a handicap. He can't, though.

I just found at that Third Strike is playable online via the street fighter anniversary collection for the xbox, I've been playing it online everyday since and I have to say that the raging demon is so much more satisfying to do against someone online.
