3D was first introduced with the past generation's consoles and it was a huge difference from 2D. But was it really an improvement?
In my opinion, 3D was the worst thing that ever happened to gaming. A few genres benefitted from being in 3D, like, platformers, as they became less linear.
But except for that, the best games are all in 2D IMO.
Shiren the Wanderer, A Link to the Past, Zelda 1, uh, I can go on forever.

I am pretty sure there was already a topic similar to this, but w/e....
I think they are both good. Who says one has to be better than another? There are some truly great 3D games. The only problem with 3D is that people think they can make their graphics extraordinary, and then pay no attention to gameplay or plot. There are games, like and Zelda, Mario 64, Super Smash Brothers, both 64 and Melee, and others. I can go on forever arguing either side. Video Games in General just rock. But, the good thing about 3D is, the newer one son discs rarely freeze. As opposed to, "****! The cat just bumped the NES! What'll we play now? Hang the cat? GET IT!!!!!!!!!"
So you see, 3D games keep you from hanging you cat? Who would honestly say they'd rather play 2D games and say goodbye to their cat? I know I wouldn't. That's why I have no cat. (At this point, the audience wonders which side Fierce Deity is actually on.)

There is a lot of emotion in some 3D RPG games like Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. The music was emotional, and the game even seemed to be based on life, and some of it's morality. Such a damn good game.
2D games like Zelda I seem like the kind of games I would like to play in an inn or hotel room on a rainy night, a bad scene for playing N64 games.
But as amusing as some of the 2D games were, the music was still ****ty, 4 to 8-bit graphics, crappy game programming i.e. when entering a whole in Zelda 1, the characters talk and you have to wait for their slow and annoying text to finish before you can move. 2D is respectable, but 3D seems to be a general burst in power.

The rest of your post confused me. I'm like, what will he vote for, 2D, 3D, both, or hang the ****ing cat NOW!...however that option got dragged into this?

That's the mood I was going for. Anyhow, I like both, as they both have their ups and downs. I think we can all agree though, (yes somebody will argue with me) that you can have more fun with a friend playing SSB: M than you can with a friend playing Pong.
There are a lot of good games from both genres though....

3D is the best thing that ever happened to gaming. I love 2D games, but the 3D ones that are good are so much better. Less repetitive, way more possibilities.

That's one of the big problems with 3D.
I've played NES, SNES and N64 games on real consoles for years. I'll have you know, they have NEVER EVER FROZE.
Pong is a pretty bad example, 'cause... Uhh... It sucks.
I would like to see 3D games that 'feel' like 2D games, like a 3D Zelda with an overhead view. That'd be totally perfect.

That would defeat the purpose of being 3D. There are some big problems with 2D games too. There are some games out there, that are just like, how the hell did they get to publish this crap? I would rather play Ocarina of Time ove rthe very first Zelda any day. You can move in different directions, and the props and items are unique, as opposed to just colored versions of the orginals. But, that can be what makes them fun. What I do like about earlier games, is that I know how to hack them. It can be pretty fun to redisgn Mario 3. Get your own levels and stuff. Change the graphics. Hah, Mario Brothers 3! No way! It is now Triscuit Pixie 3! He has to fight the evil King Nabisco to save Princess Ritz. Wooo! No more Goombas either. They are now piles of easy cheese. Forget Koopas. Doritos.

Lol, I love romhacking too, I'm just not very good at it yet.
I would rather play Zelda 1 over Ocarina of Time any day. It's not that OoT is bad, but Zelda 1 is... better...

That's true; there are different justifications of whether 2D or 3D are better, and they themselves are not really specific genres, but graphic dimension levels. Though many other things are different between 2D and 3D games, it doesn't boil down to either being better than the other.
Even so, I voted for 3D because I've never really been wowed by 2D games.

I don't really give a damn about whether or not a game is 2D or 3D.

For me it doesn't matter. My only concern is that the graphics will be clean and visible to a point. Perfect example of bad games that could have been good are on saturn and older ps1 games. The graphics weren't bad, but the animation sucked soo bad on some titles that you couldn't play through the whole game. I guess that's where 2d games dominate pretty well since there is very little animation problems or framerates in 2d games. 3d games however have opened up a whole new world of games that pretty much woul dnot be possible to make in 2d.
Anyone wanna play counter-strike in 2d? :)
