I was downloading a torrnet of a series i like to watch and when it finished downloading all the files were MKV files. what are they? they don't work in window media player, so is there anyway to make them work or convert them into a file type that will? I really hope there is because this torrent took me 4 days to download(it was 12GB)

:mad3: :mad3: :mad3: I see. You're dealing with a Matroska Video Stream here.
:nono: :nono: :nono:
Download the codec's you need to play them here: http://downloads.matroska.org/packs/
 :mad2: :mad3:
Install that package, and you should be able to play the file on your media player. I think...........................................hu h >:-O:mad:

No offense Chaos, but there's only one codec pack U'll ever need and that's the Combined Community Codec Pack, or just CCCP, get it here: http://www.cccp-project.net
I recommend using the Core Coded Media Player, plays all file types, get it @ www.corecoded.com :) .
That should do :) .....

CD, there are a lot of formats that Windows Media Player doesn't play. Idiocy, really, to make about a hundred audio and video formats that Windows Media Player can't read, like MiniUSF, DivX, and other formats. Why can't they just stick to simple WMAs, Real1 Movie files, MP3s, maybe some MIDIs, and generally just a simple pack of formats? Idiots complicating things by making 10,000 other video formats forcing us to have to download a whole god damn 'nother player just to play the file.

Windows Media Player sucks balls, same goes for Real Player with its bloatware, I don't know anyone who uses it.
Also, files like OGM, OGG and MKV, for instance, have a MUCH higher compression than Divx, Xvid, WMA, AVI and so on. Their loss of resolution and sound quality is a whole lot less.
It's the technology dude, it's not our fault that U R behind ;) ....

It's the technology dude, it's not our fault that U R behind ;) ....No, I just hate downloading software. Although, you're right; Windows Media Player is a little too simplistic. Can't read many codecs and formats. Is it me, or does Microsoft have a habit of giving us the wrong software? Like WinZip. That includes Windows XP if you're not an administrator account when I SHOULD be! I hate this OS setup.
And this?
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y210/R4YNE/Pink%20Pony%20Plague/Blank.jpg
Behind behind in technology means using JPEG image format! Of course, I don't know if you even made that image or not, but you'd at least see the wrong-pixeled area on that blue whatchamacallit at the full left in the image. See the scratchiness?
Anyway, here, let me make a little addition to your pink pony signature.

AVI CAN be compressed more, though. But still, using all of these extra unnecessary formats just to make us download more software. I hate downloading software. 7-Zip was necessary, though, I guess.

The MLP signature thing is a joke, it does not need a superb resolution. Watching a movie, copied and downloaded or not, on Ur PC does need a good resolution. Unless U want Ur screen to be filled with those nasty blocks, of course....

I was trying to play dumb with you to get you to say a certain something, but it turns out you really DID mean resolution as in pixels, for a monitor!
Oh, well. Yes, I, too, have 1,280x1,024 pixel resolution. But I've seen one with 1,600x1,200 resolution, and I've heard of one with even more than that! Couldn't REMEMBER the numbers! Anyway, this has nothing to do with MKV files, so I am finished and quite satisfied with my *****ing.:)

I appreciate you concern in the matter in thaking the time to read my opinion.
I wasnt mad, and I didnt want to be some jerk nitpicking through the thread to delete all the said posts. Personally, I was just gonna voice my opinon, (you guys asked for it in a previous post, remeber?)But if you want me to delete them, I will.
And a little advice from my experience:
"Never Brag on your Computer Skills, You never know when someone you least expect will come out of nowhere and make you feel like a moron with their skills. It's ok to announce or share your skills, but don't brag or boast about them regardless, and I too, know how it fells to be cut down by someone in this instance, dont get mad, just use it as drive to learn more ;)
And Yes, I like the colors, they make my post stand out :D
So there, at what seems to be everyone's request, I have cleaned the thread of said argument posts. If anyone wants to contest this, just PM, I am fair, and will listen to your reasons to put your posts back up.

About loss of quality and those things I think kameo is right, but not as right as he or she thinks. why? simple: those formats are very rare and not so popular than the known ones like divx, xvid, etc.
Thatīs why this Thread was created: because one of our comrades didnīt
know it...another thing that is important too: the quality loss is not that big to nottice, just 5 or 4% less.
so think first....a friendly advice.
in My opinion I preffer divx or xvid than ogm( that is the same divx or xvid but with ogg format sound)
I hate looking for so many codecs!!

I thought you were angry because of all the :mad3:  :mad2: smilies you used. Also, your point about respect, it just seemed like you were angry. Guess I thought wrong.
It would be best to delete them...nobody needs to see them. But, yes, thank you for trying to reason things out instead of immediately moderating my posts, so you are very reasonable. Though I should never have posted them, so they shouldn't be kept. THIS post, however...I think seems meritful to be kept. Especially for what I'm about to tell, to clear up what you've said in green.
Yeah, what you said in green. My favorite color! Nah, point being, I wasn't trying to brag. Oh, no. I may have seemed like it...and I was doing it, though, but the reason I said all of that to chaos master was because he thought it was so easy to learn everything I learned. Now, let me tell you, there's a lot of things about him you have to know to see what's worth being ****ed off for. But I wasn't trying to make myself like a smartass. Sorry for that impression. He just thinks it's so easy, and I got carried away. And you're right; I dislike braggarts, though I tend to be one. Although, I have to admit, I don't mind it when people brag as long as they don't think they're something they're not, overestimate themselves, and think they're the best among all the people around them without knowing. If they have something real to brag about, they deserve it, don't they? Hard work.
I'm a bit of a color person, myself. Like in my avatar. In fact, my favorite branch of Science class is the study of color. I like that ****. I know a lot of the science of why things are the color they are, and even the atomics behind it. And of course the standards codes of RGB, HSL, and, merely about CYMK. I'm not bragging! I'm very sure you, Kameo, and some others who work with imaging know that as well, and to uncertain factors, more than me at an unknown probability.

Oh, and MKV and OGM R gaining lots of terrain on AVI, just because of high quality sound. I have movies and series, in MKV and OGM, that come with three or four different languages and subs, I haven't come across an AVI that had this feature as well. It might not be a big deal, but for those who R in the "business" it really is ;) ....

Another thing you must take in count guys:
.avi is not an exclusive extension for xvid or divx.
avi means: Audio-Video interlace, so many formats can adopt this extension...some saturn video files are .avi, By example.

Yes, .avi has bee around for some time now.
AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave. It is a special case
of the RIFF (Resource Interchange File Format). AVI is defined by
Microsoft. AVI is the most common format for audio/video data on the
PC. AVI is an example of a de facto (by fact) standard.
It is a standard used for many common types of video, but currently the most compatible codec and decompressor is the Xvid and Divx Codec. But that doesnt mean that xvid and divx are the only type of. avi format ever used, you are correct. ;)
Avi gas been aroud longer than that dude, it orginally was created to be "something better than quicktime" back in the older days, and was also common in some laser disc players, Laser discs were a common video discs before the days of DVD, it just never got any bigger than VHS, when they first came out, I had one and got the movie "braveheart" - the disc was as big as one of my old records, like a 12 inch CD!
