View Full Version : Games That Need More Attention

Some absolutely magnificent games are sometimes left unnoticed for some reasons, mainly for being in japanese.
Fortunantely, people have translated the ROMs for these games. Thank you Aeon Genesis for translating some of my absolute favourites.

Let me name a few...
Shin Megami Tensei. You might've heard of this one before, but it hasn't gotten the attention it deserves, and many people have never heard of it.
This is one of the greatest RPG's for the SNES. It should be up there with Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 3/6 and Tales of Phantasia.

Shiren the Wanderer, also for the SNES, is one of my personal favourites. I am obsessed with this game. It's a rougelike RPG (dungeons are randomly generated)
The game is like one big final boss fight. Strategic and difficult, one mistake and you're dead. If you die, you start all over at level 1 in the beginning, though any process in the quests will be saved.
This game is not for the impatient. You end up in a Monster House and get shot down by a Mini Tank, or whatever they're called. OK, maybe the dungeon generator played a prank on you, but you'll try again, and notice there is a way to escape those Monster Houses, or maybe you kill all the monsters in them and gain 2 level-ups.
It may look like an Action/RPG at first, but you'll find out soon enough it's actually turn based.
Enough said, here's a few early game screenshots.
Yes I HAVE got further in the game, I just lost the save:mad3:

I've never played Halo 1, 2, or 3 for Xbox, and I don't care to. Morrowind was properly given the award Game of the Year 2002, and I don't think there's a better game for the Xbox.

Although, some people hate it compared to Oblivion, so I am not recommending everyone to play it, exactly. I really liked it because of its connections between things in life, and being a fun RPG game. But, yes, it wasn't as good in GUI design or graphics as Oblivion for Xbox 360.

Iconoclast, you're missing the point of the thread. A game given the Game of the Year award hardly needs more attention.

I don't think that matters, as it somehow became famous anyway. More users on this site, at a ratio of 5:1, would have heard of Halo and not Morrowind. The award Morrowind was given had little to no effect on its popularity. People only look at that as some kind of symbol of a misleading rating.

Well, Halo is a brainless FPS and Morrowind is a magnificent, deep, RPG masterpiece.

A very old adventure/side scroll game on Sega Genesis called "Wonderboy in Monster World" was an excellent game. When I first played it as a kid, I thought "man this game is long". Now that I played it again, I beat it within 2 hours I think it was. But anyways, yeah great game that wasn't too well known.

I can say this, though: Majora's Mask doesn't need anymore attention, as for some reason, it seems to attract more disappointed people who think Ocarina of Time was better. Zelda OOT was crap compared to Majora's Mask in my opinion, though. Obviously, some people just have an ignorant sort of taste.

And, though this is off-topic, closest thing I can say that I care about. Complaining about an underated game is similar enough to listing games that weren't as liked as they should have been.

Yeah, but that's totally different from getting attention or not. Shiren the Wanderer or Shin Megami Tensei doesn't get any attention because they have never been released in english, not for any console. Shiren the Wanderer hasn't even been fan translated until just recently.

FF6 for the SNES, simply because it isn't in English.

I'd say Earthbound is up there as well.

Naw, the only other games Wonderboy is affilated with are on the original sega master system. It's kind of like the side scroll version of Zelda but more fun. Check it out, I believe it is in the archive of genesis roms on this site.

I was saying that the FF3 in Japan probably needed more attention, but as it is being remade for the DS, I'm not too sure it does anymore.

I was saying that the FF3 in Japan probably needed more attention,Nah, almost everyone who was into gaming at the time has played that game. I don't think any certain games need more attention currently, but I can think of a few that deserve LESS attention.

One game that I feel is underrated is Sudeki, for the Xbox. With some mags and sites giving it 6.5 out of 10, or 2.5 out of 5 and the likes, I don't think many people are getting it.

I got it yesterday (before I read any reviews or scores for it) and I love it. It is a really fun game to play (story isn't the best out there, but the art and everything else is amazing). The characters and battle system are cool. It's like an Action RPG except in 3D (not like Zelda. A proper Action RPG with the stats, levelling up, inventory, and real time battles).

One thing which I took a liking to (which others may not) is that EVERY NPC is voice acted. Everything in the game is voiced except introductions to key areas when you enter for the first time. And the voices don't suck as much as they could :p I liked hearing the different accents in the game. I came across American, British, Irish, Scottish, and German (plus unknown).

I would give this game 8.5 - 9 / 10, if you're looking for something to just pass the time on the Xbox :D

Looks interesting. I'll check it out once I have played my current games (Sudeki, Halo 1 and 2). Give me a week or two :)

Morrowind is a very popular game. Almost every gamer I know has played that game atleast once. BTW it was originally on the PC and was ported to the Xbox. The PC version I'm told was cooler because of mods your could download for the game.

I agree that this is indeed an awesome game. However I would not advise buying it. I myself beat the game in a 3 day rental. Maybe if the game was longer, then I'd want to go and put actual money out for it. On gameplay it gets an 8-9/10, Visuals 7-8/10,Story 6-7/10,Length 3/10,Replayabilitie 5-6/10. It's only replayable because it is fun to go around being up things and fighting the bosses over.

I, fortunately, got it for free :) It was a BOGOF deal for £20 games (buy one get one free). It's quite a gem of a game, for RPG fans who have the Xbox. I can't wait for the Mistwalker Studios' games scheduled for the 360 :D Enchanted Arms on the 360 too. Now I just need to get a 360 when the price comes down XD

Zelda has stats, inventory and real time battles, but it's got heart containers and a magic metre instead of stupid numbers. Levelling up doesn't make an RPG, I've got an edition of D&D which doesn't feature levelling up, and any gamer in the world would consider D&D an RPG.

I like to use the proper meanings of words when I speak. If people don't know what I mean, I explain it. Then that's more people in the world that are educated to my style of proper English use :p

Statistics is defined as "Collection of numbers to record and analyze data such as occurrences of events and particular characteristics". Numbers are a big part of stats and you can't have it without it (number of hearts could count as a stat, but there is no strength, defence, etc.).

I should have been more specific with the word inventory. I meant it to include market inventory too, related to the price of goods; basically sellable items. It's not quite the same as Zelda. I would class Sudeki similar to a 3D Secret of Mana, rather than Zelda. Or else, you could say Metal Gear Solid is an RPG (since that has many similar quialities to Zelda; the health, inventory, real time battles.)

Anyway, the definition of an RPG can be very hazy. Some may think one thing defines an RPG, some may think another thing does. I like to keep my definition strict so that too many games don't fall into the category. I just checked, and GameFAQs seems to agree. It has classed Zelda as an Adventure game, and Sudeki as an RPG.

One gaming series that I like that is underrated, is the Dino Crisis series. I only have 2 and 3, but I think these games are pretty cool, but have hardly heard of them in public.

I think it's more action/adventure than anything, as well. It has elements of all the great genres though.
