Yeah, there are a lot out there. Let's make a list.

Anyway, I'm going to have to coat myself in gasoline and await the flaming here, but I think most of the Final Fantasy games are overrated.
I'm not saying they aren't good by any means, I just think they're a tad overhyped.

The Bloodrayne games are INSANELY overrated. DOA is overrated. The new Mortal Kombat games are overrated. The GTA series is overrated. More to come.

Agreed on ALL of the above.
Bloodrayne lost my interest quickly.
The Mortal Kombat franchise went way downhill, because it's all repetitive now.
The GTA games are always okay at first, but then they become a snoozefest.
Oh, and the DOA games are more about the scantily clad females than actual gameplay.
The Halo series is overrated. Racing games with good graphics are usually far overrated. The Medal of Honor series is fun, but overrated. Battlefield 2 is overrated. Quake 4 and Doom 3 are overrated. Prey is overrated. Final Fantasy VII and X, however, are the kings of overrated games.

I couldn't agree more with you on that. Again, not saying that they are not decent games. Just stating that they are overwhelmingly overhyped.

I am a big FF fan, but I agree.. the FF games are too overrated.
Another "genre" of game that's overrated is movie tie-ins. Movie games are usually ****, but get ads on TV and end up being high in buyers charts in game stores, since ignorant parents get the crap for their kids.
Ragnarok Online... OMG.. people have been raping the line "Ragnarok pwns!!!" way too much. I have played. It's rather... um.. not good for what your expectations become.

Know what else is overrated? Those retarted-*** puzzle games that everyone's into. I simply cannot believe that anyone could play that stuff for more than five minutes and not be bored. Granted, I loved Dynomite, but everything after that failed to hold my interest for even twenty seconds.

While we're talking about overrated online games, we might as well get the most overrated of them on the list. Which of course would be, RuneScape.
There isn't a library in Ohio that isn't flooded with 12 year olds getting their RuneScape on.

I don't like the word "overrated"... If everybody rates a game high except you just because you don't like the game, are you right to say it's "overrated?"
Overhyped would be a better word. I don't know of any game/series that's overhyped that you haveb't already mentioned, but Dragon Quest is waaay underhyped. If that's even a word.
I can think of a thousand series that are "underhyped". But since that's not the point of the thread... I'll just stfu.

Overrated.. overhyped.. those aren't the words I would use, to describe Fable; a better word would be utter disappointment. I remember when Peter Molyneux released early details on the game..
It was gonna be online, you could change your appearance severely, if you played at night you became pale - or became more tanned in the sun, a slash in battle actually resulted in a scar exactly like the cut you recieved/dealt, you would age as time went on (not as you levelled up, but actual time passing), it would be night and day, to correspond with your Xbox time settings...
When they delivered NONE of the above, after promising to do so, I lost faith in Lionhead Studios/ Big Blue Box. If Fable was how they said it would be, it would possibly have been one of the top 5 best RPGs ever.

DUD U NUB RUNSCEEPE RULES!!!
I actually have an account on it, because I used to play it. A year or so after Runscape 2 came out, I quit. I still have a santa hat and random other trinkets that have gone up in price insanely last time I checked. So if I ever decide to play a game with a lot of whiny idiots, I'll be pretty well off.

Pretty overrated games.

Beyond the Fantasy sense of heroism and pride.
I am personally unable to see what other qualities this game has to warrant the accolade it recieves. Not a bad game, and the design/art assets are pretty impressive, but there's nothing that makes it any more special than other MMO's.
Well, that's what I think...I can see why people enjoy it though.

Well, that's what I think...I can see why people enjoy it though. As far as detail, it's similar to most other MMORPGS, but when you start getting into battle systems, raids, instances, PVP, battlegrounds, and the ridiculous number of quests, items, skills, build types, professions, and everything else the game has to offer, it's pretty hard to quit. The story isn't bad either, and the sheer number of things to do can keep most people amused for days.
I'm not a big MMORPG guy, but I do know that WoW is definitely a shot or two above the rest of the crowd.

I've met many who liked WoW a lot but then stopped playing it because it ends up in a circle of how many II's youve been in how much honor youve got and so on... also it cost a very large sum of money every two months unless you have a creditcard which is about the same amount but paid for monthly...

Every. Single. One. They all end up in endgame with repetitve things to do, like go to dungeons/instances, PvP, kill things, etc., but less so in WoW. There's just so much to do, even in the endgame, it'd even keep an ADD like CM satisfied! Maybe.

Runescape.
Halo is said to be overrated, but really isn't. It's a cool game, and Microsoft was smart enough to make it playable on the Internet, which makes it even better. Without the online playing, it wouldn't be so great.

With that exact description, I can think of several FPS games that meet that criteria, lol.
Overrated games? I've got one, it begins with an F, and ends with a VII. Take the hint. :)
Here's some more.
Elder Scrolls
Halo
World of Warcraft
Final Fantasy XI
Maple Story
Gunbound
Runescape
I doubt that. I also doubt Halo deserves all that hype.Non-PC Halo isn't that great.
I've played (but not stuck with) lots of MMORPGS, and they all seem to end in two different ways.
1: You level up too fast, getting to endgame, leaving yourself with relatively little to do.
2: You take a SUPER-long time to level to the max, and the grind to get there is boring/pretty boring.
WoW sort of combines the two. It has a low level cap, but there's lots of **** to do both before you hit 60 and when you hit it. With the expansion, the cap will be raised to 75 or something, and you'll be able to get flying mounts.
Guild Wars is similar to Wow in that you level up far too fast. Both games are focused on middle-to-endgame content with Guild Wars putting more emphasis on storyline and WoW more on items and raids.
Dammit, I have to go back to work soon.

ok can someone tell me how ff7 is overhyped? it lived up to evrything it was supposed to and i know a lot of people like me that still replay it because the game rocks so damn much. I agree that ff10 was a little overhyped.. and so is the halo franchise, it hasnt done anything that other games havent and if all you care about is graphics then go get FEAR or download the MP FEAR Combat

How was FFXI overhyped? I saw little to no hype for that game.....also Elder Scrolls is not an overhyped game if your a RPG fan because it delivers on everything an RPG should have.
Heres a overated game.
Super Smash Brothers. I mean it for the whole series, not just the N64 version. It's fun yes, but not as great as everyone is making it out to be, and gets old after awhile because its basically the same thing over and over and over and over again.

That's totally a matter of opinion. I think Super Smash Bros Melee is the best fighting game EVER.

Elder Scrolls isn't really RPG, it's more Adventure. It's like calling Legend of Zelda an RPG. And it isn't good at all compared with the hype it gets. Start with Morrowind. The storyline is garbage. It doesn't explain what to do. You wander around aimlessly for hours on end, because it doesn't tell you how to find anything. Everybody/Everything outside a town tries to kill you. The monsters are overpowered once you pass 3 days. That's when big flying squids and Pterodactyls appear. Carrying on with Oblivion, The game is glitched to hell. Unless you pay £1000s of pounds to upgrade your computer, or pay £400 for an Xbox 360 even if you don't want one, it's slow as hell. I played it and felt that it was just the same as Morrowind, so I didn't bother. The games suck, yet there are plenty of players saying WHEEE RPG WAHOO.

That's because everybody who hasn't played it doesn't like it. But most of the people that have played it are obsessed. You make a new character to start off, you get given 60 gil. Wow, that won't even buy you a potion. You kill the nearest enemies, you'll most likely get nothing, but if you DO get something, it sells for something like 20 gil. Sometimes less. You level up a bit, find a party. Cool. Kill one enemy and it's "gtg bye!1". Bam. Party gone. The gameplay gets boring after your first few levels, and there isn't much to do except for kill things. What a waste of time.
I think Super Smash Bros Melee is the best fighting game EVER.
SSBM has millions of players, and it's been out for close to 5 years. It's fun for a while, sure. But it gets boring fast.

Are you dumb!? Elder Scrolls is much more like the original paper-and-pen RPG's than any other computer-or-console game I've played.
You wanna know why? Because of the freedom to whatever you want. You CAN kill people at random, but if you do, soliders will pwn you. You can give the ring to Fargoth so he will tell Arille to give you a discount, or you can keep the ring. It should be added, you can give him the ring and then steal it.
If you think Final Fantasy is an RPG, but not Morrowind... You're dumb.
Besides, Morrowind HAS a story. You just need to listen to what people say.
From your post, it sounds like you didn't read anything people said and just walked around and killed stuff at random.

Er, no. It isn't.

What? Almost all RPGs have freedom to do whatever. There are just a select few. And most Paper-Pen RPGs don't, most of the time you have to do whatsomebody says. If you could do whatever you want on a paper-pen RPG, then people would say "I kill teh monster" and it wouldn't be any fun.
You CAN kill people at random
Er, read my post. I didn't say you couldn't.
Besides, Morrowind HAS a story. You just need to listen to what people say.
"What's your name."
"There's a guy coming."
"Get off the boat."
"Where are you from?"
"Fill out these forms."
Go outside.
"I've lost my ring, have you seen it?"
"Ah, thank you for finding it!"
Everybody else outside says.
"What do you want?"
So much for that theory.
You can give the ring to Fargoth
Did that.
I also stole the ring back. Now please tell me when did I say that you couldn't do this quest?
"Wander around aimlessly"......because it doesn't tell you how to do the MAIN quest.
it sounds like you didn't read anything people said and just walked around and killed stuff at random.
I think it sounds more like the game is poorly written and that it doesn't tell you what to do.

The guard captain tells you to go see Caius Cosades. He will tell you what to do next. If you can't realize that you're stupid.
If you get the Tribunal expansion, you get thrown into the storyline after an attempted assassination during your sleep.
If your choices are limited in a paper-and-pen RPG, it's because the dungeon master or wtf he's called in english is bad.

I'll have to tell you guys, Morrowind and Oblivion dissapointed me. Too boring. It take forever to get from one city to another, and when you get there you have to read for hours just to understand where to go to next.
