Controller help

I'm doing my best to learn how Mame works without asking too many questions. I'm at a brick wall now. I bought a controller and in Pole Position, it won't steer left or right. It's programmed right and works, I varified this in the control panel for windows. I can not figure out what I need to do.
2nd problem in Ikari Warriors the guy is uncontrollable, again I don't know what to do about it. If anyone can help I sure would apprieciate it. It's a saitek controller with around 14 buttons. Thanks

Are your controls set within the emulator as well?

It's set to the best I understand it.

Try hitting tab ingame, you can set controls individually for each game that way.
