Sony Corp. is on track for launching 1.2 million PlayStation 3 units by year's end, but the launch breakdown will heavily favor the more expensive 60G byte models.
Expect roughly an 80/20 split between the premium and core PS3s at launch.
After a recent meeting at Sony's US headquarters, analysts at Lazard Capital Markets have confirmed that there will be an approximate 80/20 percent split between the number of premium (60GB) and core (20GB) PS3 units available at retail outlets through the end of the year. Roughly 80 percent of the initial shipment of 500,000 PS3s will be of the US$599 60 GB variety; the remaining 20 percent will be the cheaper US$499 models.
After the initial launch of 400,000 PlayStation 3 units in the U.S., Sony plans to ship another 800,000 by the end of 2006, making a total of 1.2 million units available by the end of 2006.
And by January, Sony predicts that improvements in Blu-ray production and easing of component shortages will allow the company to ship roughly 1.2 million units per month. Lazard suggests that 14 million PS3s will be shipped through 2007.
So far they still have to manufacture one single working model, so don't get to jumpy about this news ;) .....

Well, I'm just gonna wait to get a PS3. I do want one, but there's no way I'm paying $600 for one. Even the core price is a rip off. I'm also going to assume that there's going to be bugs like all the other first PS1 and PS2 models out there.

I believe I already have like a half an hour's worth of material typed over this forum about my feelings toward sony and their decisions with the PS3, So I thinks its needless to say for me that when PS3 hits the market, I won't be standing in Line. I will be a long time before I ever spend a dime on PS3, if I do at all.
I'm also going to assume that there's going to be bugs like all the other first PS1 and PS2 models out there.
Nobody will think much of it, because it's Sony. :(
If I get a PS3, I'll wait a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time. Can't afford. :(

Well at times like this, I'm glad I don't have kids because they would be nagging me to get them one. :mad2:

Oh, if I would have kids I'd let them save their money and buy it themselves, they'll soon enough find out how much $600 for a Game console is ;) .....
Well, to be fair, it's just for the PS3. The 360 and Wii have affordable pricetags.

You think the Xbox360 was affordable? I admit it is not as bad as sonyPS3, but the system was still 500 Dollars at release! the atari wasnt even that high with the compared inflation when it released, and if the Ps3 is gonna be $600, 500 is still the closest to it yet at a console release.

Hell no! The Xbox 360 is 450 bucks now. That's not too much off. I'm gonna get the PS3 though. But first I'll have to mooch off of the PS2 games. Soon the PS2 will be very emulatable, and then I'm off to blockbusters! :D

*pokes* The Xbox 360 was $400 plus tax where I'm at, and thats the expensive version. However the PS2 is still going to be $600. So yeah go Xbox and affordablility!
