What's the whole point on downgrading?

I hear people saying they want to downgrade their PSPs to play Homebrew games. When I heard about that I wanted to downgrade my 2.6 to 1.0 but then I heard you can still play SNES games using 2.6 and GTA. THen I wanted to play N64 games but I heard you could play them using 2.6, altough all Emulators aren't so good so far.
What's the whole point? I hear v2.6 is better than v1.0 since you can do alot more stuff like picture sharing and internet browsing.

Well I believe you heard wrong because you cannot run homebrews on 2.6. The reason why peiple downgrade is solely to run homebrew apps and etc., but those programs have not been developed for higher firmware.
