its good stuff!

EDIT: Some spyware is so bad that you have to boot in Safe Mode to get rid of it. This program works very well, but some spyware automatically reinstalls itself if you remove it. If you see the same spyware showing up after you scan using this, then try rebooting in Safe Mode and run the program under safe mode

No problem:) If spyware keeps reinstalling itself remember to run the program in Safe Mode.

Bit of advice too, DON'T CLICK ON POP-UP OR BANNER ADS and try to avoid downloading any thing that is "free" such as screensavers and crap like that. It usually isn't free, you pay a hefty fee in spyware infections:)

Yeah, I heard that between Adware Se and Spybot it will catch most spyware and both are free. I think if you use Mozilla as your browser it will help prevent spyware too because IE has so many security holes. I use IE 6 and don't have any trouble with spyware. I just avoid clicking on pop up and banner ads. If I go to a site that gives me spyware, I don't go there again. I also use the pop up blocker on google toolbar.

3. Getting tired of spam? Click here and get a free Xbox 360! Duh...that is the hottest console, right? Don't they ever say PS3?

Sometimes I get error messages while I'm 90% done with a Flash programming project that I haven't saved saying, "Macromedia Flash MX Professional 2004 has encountered a serious problem and needs to close." Is it spyware you are trying to get rid of or an actual virus?

Make sure all your virus definitons are up to date, and if they are and still isn't getting rid of it, I've heard of a program called hijack this, I've never used it but it is supposed to be very good at getting rid of spyware. I've heard it is dangerous to use as you can easily end up deleting files you shouldn't. I will try to find some of the sites that I've read about it and give you links. I've had my PC so bogged down with spyware before though that I gave on on trying to get rid of it so I had to reinstall windows completely. Something nobody wants to do, but somtimes its really the only way to get rid of it, especailly if you can't get rid of it in safe mode.

EDIT: here is some good info about removing spyware and malware. Try this link first > http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

If that fails you can try hijack this > http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

This is mostly for spyware and malware, not virues. If it is an actual virus you have and norton or mcafee can't remove it after you get the latest definitions then you may have to reinstall windows.

No sorry it's malware and spyware, and ok ill check those links out.
But i want to wait a day or two before i try anything that might mess up my computer, because the spyware, or w/e its called, might not be yet a known trace.
But thanks for the links ill look into them.

Oh, another thing you might want to try is system restore. its under Start>Accessories>System Tools. You can restore your PC to a previous state. It doesn't delete any files on your harddrive but removes all installed programs and registry entries. I've never actually had any luck with this, but it is an easy step that is worth a try, you might have better luck with it then I have.

pizzaman

Sorry jambog, that system rcovery thing didnt work:(
And nothing else worked that i tried has so far.
Do you think that reinstalling my computer will get rid of the virus? Or can the virus still be active?
Oh and another thing, if anyone has any more information about that hijackers program or anything else that will be useful.
Right now im saving all of my "important files" onto DVDs, just in case something bad happens to my computer.
And this will be the last day i'll be on for about 3 days, SO IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME PLEASE DO!(If you do, ill reward you:) )
Well anyway, if you can help do. And after those 3 days ill see if my spysweeper has any new updates on this virus.
Thanks you for your help(to those people who ACTUALLY help).:)

If you completely reformat your harddrive and reinstall windows, then you will wipe out any viruses, spyware, malware and anything else that is messing up your PC. Also you might want to format your Master Boot Record (MBR) WARNING: don't use this method to format the MBR if the harddrive you are formatting has more than one partition or has another OS on it for dual boot (Unless you plan on wiping all partitions and other OS's) but I always boot up in DOS and use the fdisk command to format, to format the MBR it is fdisk \mbr (i think). You can reinstall windows without actually formatting anything, but I'd format to be sure any spyware and viruses are gone. Make sure you have EVERYTHING you want backed up, cause once you format there is no recovering anything.

I hope maybe somebody comes along with something that can keep you from formatting, but if you have ran all the virus and spyware utilities and they havn't worked, I'd say reformatting is your only option to get rid of it.

Of course if you have a Dell or Gateway or system like that that has a toll free tech support line, call them first, they may be able to help you get rid of the thing. If not then they can help you through the reformatting process.

Thanks Jombog, I'll try that, but all nero isn't working for me, and i think its that virus(oh and i found out that there is a virus, and it's making all that spyware and other viruses too).So do you recomand any program that i can get that is as easy to use, since i just need a quick easy program. You shouldn't have to get rid of any of the ones you got, just download the ones you don't like CCleaner and Spybot Search and Destroy. Also make sure you get the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (if you have automatic updates turned on, and always install the updates then you probably already have this) and also Microsoft Windows Defender 1051 (Beta 2), and if after running those programs, if you don't see results you will have to get the hijack this program and read about how to use it. I've never had to use it, so I have no idea how. You will probably have to post the hijack log onto the majorgeeks forum, and hope somebody there can help you further.

You use bitdefender in step 6, but I think you use their online scanner so you don't have to actually install it. I don't know how much bitdefender is, but Grisoft AVG scanner is completely free and is excellent. I have heard having more then one virus scanner installed on a PC can cause conflicts, but I had AVG and Norton both installed and running at the same time and never had problems.

Well the thing is that i can't uninstall Macafee, or at least not all of it:mad:

I had Macafee and couldn't get it uninstalled from my PC either, I finally got rid of it after a reinstall, and never installed it back. Any program that won't let you fully uninstall it, I won't use. I got Norton Corporate, but if you don't feel like paying for one, get AVG free.

Ok quick question, how long will it take to reinstall and reformat my computer?

jambog
04-25-2006, 09:31 PM
Shouldn't take no more then an hour to format and get windows up and running again. What takes a long time is installing all your games, programs, and drivers again (depending on how much stuff you have to install again) Make sure you have your Windows reinstall disc and WPA code before formatting, also make sure you have the drivers disc to be able to reinstall all your drivers. If you don't have the drivers disc you can usually find all the drivers you need at the motherboard manufaturers website.

You don't have to use fdisk to format you harddrive, windows will ask if you want to format it before it installs, but like I mentioned before, you should use fdisk so that you can format the MBR incase there are any viruses hiding in there. I'm not sure if windows formats the MBR when it formats. Also use NTFS when asked what file system to format it (After you format your harddrive it will be RAW, but windows asks if you want to use FAT32 or NTFS before installing, choose NTFS) Also you might have to go into your BIOS to set you PC to boot from the CD/DVD ROM. Most PCs are automatically set to do this, but if after you format and have the windows disc in the CD ROM if it doesn't boot from the CD then its because your CD ROM isn't set as a boot device. Most computers us F1 or F2 to enter the BIOS, but like I said most pcs are already set to boot from the CD ROM so you shouldn't have to enter the BIOS (but you might so be aware of how to do it)

pizzaman
04-25-2006, 10:46 PM

Ok, if its not too much trouble, could you post some useful tips on reformatting my computer?
Thanks.

Double check to make sure all your important data is backed up. A checklist of the data you want to back up is a good idea.

After you have chosen the files to be backed up, scan them for viruses either before you format, or right after you reinstall your OS and copy them back to your HDD.

Make sure you have your OS reinstall disc and make sure it is clean and not too badly damaged, and have your WPA code ready to enter after you finish reinstalling windows.

If you have a Dell or Gateway computer, they probably have detailed instructions in the manuel on how to format a harddrive and reinstall windows. Also use there toll free tech support numbers.

Before you format for the first time just google in "formatting a harddrive" and "reinstalling windows XP" (if XP is your OS) and about a million websites will pop up telling you what to do, just find one that you think is easy to understand, read and reread it until you got it, or print the steps out. Formatting isn't too bad. The worst part is that damn WPA. Its 25 digits which takes forever to type in, then you might get the "this code has been used too many times, please contact microsoft for service" this won't happen if you have a dell or gateway because the WPA is in the BIOS on the motherboard so you don't have to activate windows when you reinstall. Then of course reinstalling all of the programs and drivers is a pain and time consuming.

pizzaman
04-26-2006, 11:55 PM
Ok i got everything exept when what you said about backing up my important files:confused:

jambog
04-27-2006, 12:28 AM
Well, I would always make a list of what I want to back up and make sure I got it all. Its easy to remember the files in your My Documents folder, but I use to format and forget to back up all my saved games such as the saved games in your Project64 folder in the program files.Internet Favorites are also easy to forget to backup. I would have a ton of websites saved in my favorites and lose them all when I formatted cause I would never think to back them up. Remember to think of all the little things like that that you would miss if you lost them. Nero has a great backup feature, now I use it to backup all the data I wouldn't want to lose, it automatically backs up the data once a week so if I need to reinstall I know all my files are automatically backed up and are safe incase I have a crash.

I always make sure to scan any files for viruses too (especially cracked programs) just to be sure I didn't get the virus that caused me to reinstall in the frist place from a program I am going to reinstall again once I get windows back up.

pizzaman
04-27-2006, 01:19 AM
Yea i got that part but what did you mean when you said this?
After you have chosen the files to be backed up, scan them for viruses either before you format, or right after you reinstall your OS and copy them back to your HDD.

jambog
04-27-2006, 07:49 AM
Oh, I ment that if your PC is too messed up for virus scan to work before you reinstall, and you back your files up to DVDs then after you get windows up and running, scan your backup DVDs for viruses before copying the files back on your harddrive and installing any of them.

OS=operating system
HDD=harddrive

If that is what confused you.

Also another tip is the first thing I would do as soon as I got windows up and running again is install windows updates and whatever virus protection you use very frist thing.

admin
04-27-2006, 12:31 PM
Yes, the first thing you should do after a complete reformat is to install internet security programs, such as anti-virus and a firewall. If you do not already have these programs, I highly suggest you try ZoneAlarm - www.zonelabs.com (it will cost you some money, though).

No i used their support, but its not really that complicated. I pretty much just click on a couple of things and the computer did the rest. And it took pretty much about an hour or so, so it's worth it IMO.

Yeah, its not a hard thing to do, but I was scared to death the first time I did it. Gateway support is great, I use to call them about any little problem I had, and thats how I learned most of the stuff I know about PCs.

You know whats funny tho? I just had internet since december and i probably know more about using it then anyone at my school. I mean I'm not on here 24/7 like a lot of people i know, but its just easy to learn for me. And computers aren't really difficult to use when you enderstand them.

Yeah, I am in college and I am surprised at the lack of computer skills some of the people I have class with have. There are people that can't even create new folders or don't know how to save documents.

A little tech support 101.

Your computer's running slow, first thing you do: (I assume you're running a windows operating system. Bill Gates owns us all....)

1) Go into your start menu
2) All programs->accessories->system tools
3) Run disc clean up.
4) Start menu->all programs->accessories->system tools
5) Run disc defrag.

Now, the disc clean up will delete certain files, temporary files for internet stuff, and the like. You'll have to log in to websites you frequently visit again. But I think it's a small price to pay for a little peace of mind.

Disc defrag will re-arrange files on your hard drive, it'll speed up processor time because your computer won't have to search all over the memory bank for bits and pieces of the program you're running.

Assuming you have enough room to do so (which you always should. Save stuff to CDs if you have to, keeping spare room for maintainance tasks is essential in maintaining PC health.) do these things every two weeks. Even if it says it's not needed, do it.

Spyware and adware is a contributing factor, yes, but wiping certain files from your hard-drive will take a lot of those out anyway.

Hope the info is useful. It's saved my hide a few times.

Thats great and all, Defrag on ole' Hard Disk, but here is another one to help speed things up. When was the last time you checked to on how much of you memory or CPU is being wasted?

Have you used Windows Task Manager to check the commit charge?

-Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to open the Windows task manager.
-Click the "processes" tab.
-Look at the bottom of the window, you will see "commit charge" followed by a number, a "/" symbol, and a number. See it? The left number is how much memory is being commited to run all programs currently running, incuding windows.
-The two amounts should NOT be equal, this would indicate I am using almost if not all of my RAM. For example, my commit charge right now is 332M/1710M th M stand for MB(Megabytes) so I still have plenty of memory to run whatever.

You can also use that menu (CTRL+ALT+DEL Menu, Processes tab) to see if any programs running are draining your CPU by using too much of it. Under the Process tab you will see a few categoies, Image name (progam name), User Name(what part of the system it is running under) an so on. One of the categories is title "CPU" and each progarm will have a 00, ro something else. the two digits represent the PERCENT of your CPU's power that program using, in easiest terms.
NOTE: one of the programs in the Processes list, may be titled, "System Idle Process" and be at like 98 or 99 or somewhere around there. Dont Worry! its just telling you how much of your CPU power is being unused. so 98 or 99 when your just web browsing or typing like I am now, is normal.

I hope this helped you speed up your PC a bit.;)

Thats cool. But, you know what? Sony's tech support are among the stupidest people I have ever met. On the chain of stupidity, they are right in between the crusty skanky guy at the gas station payphones trying to find quarters for crack, and George "Dubya".

I have actually called them trying to find a solution to a problem, and then actually had to explain to them how to get to the control panel!! Yes. I am dead serious the guy didnt know how to get to the "system" icon in the control panel.

I have no doubt anyone on this site using windows could do it perfectly the first try, maybe even turned away from the screen. How stupid can you be?

And if they are? What would one do? Nice to be able to see things, but you haven't really told me how to speed up processor times.
