Using Project64, I can play the game just fine. But when I go into VS. Mode and hover my character select cursor over one of the characters, Windows XP (98 was better) gives me Dr. Watson's Debugger, says I encountered an error, and closes Project64. What the hell just happened? I think it has something to do with my input plugin, N-Rage's Direct-Input 8 Plugin.

Try Jabo's Direct Input instead and see if that solves the problem...

No, it didn't work. It's not the plugin? ...I guess it might be that I only have one controller plugged in, but that's no reason to lock up. When playing the actual game on the N64, it works with one controller. In the meantime, I'll try it....
Nope. Forget what I said about the input plugin now.

I don't know actually, try configuring the 2nd player's control. Atleast the emulator then has input for two players ;).
Emulators and consoles R not the same thing. A emulator might run a Game and behave like a console, but of course it is not. We R limited to how our PCs handle them. So what works fine on a real N64 doesn't mean it will work like that on an emulator.

NOW I've found it. It's just the cheats I was using. I rarely blame problems like this on the emulator. If it was the emulator's fault, would there not have been a post like this sooner?

I have had problems with games locking up when I use the built in cheat database on PJ64. Mainly with Turok: Dinosour Hunter. Locks up 5 minutes into the games with any cheat turned on, doesn't lock up at all with them off. I try to avoid using cheats all together on emulators to prevent lock ups now.

I'll bet, then, that the cheat(s) causing this problem was a modifier. It should have some kind of notes telling you about it. The problem I had was caused by the character modifier cheat. It told me to only turn it on AFTER selecting my character, which explained why my emulator shut down. Try applying the cheats later in the game.

Might be the reason why my Perfect Dark refuses to load certain levels, I'll try and delete the cheats I've used from the memory pack file. Never thought it was possibly caused be the use of cheats...

Same here, Kameo, about never thinking cheats would be the problem. That surprised me too. When I was playing some wrestling games on PJ64 and using the cheats it didnt lock up on me, probably depends on what your pc has, and how it handles it. Like mine is a laptop with 1 GB of Ram, so the only problem I had was sound.

Not all games will lock up with cheats activated. I think there is a way to edit the codes in, so maybe you could edit them. I don't know if they use gameshark codes or something else. PJ64 states in the user manual that using cheats will cause it to crash. You can use the Help menu to go to the User Manual and find out more info about using and editing cheats.

Gameshark codes are available at the following addresses: (Yes, they are allowed! Use them with pride.)
http://www.gscentral.com (didn't work for me)
http://www.realmofgaming.com/?page=n64gameshark.php&type=cheats
...That's it. Google the other sites; it's easy. Search for, for example, 'gameshark "name of your game" cheats'.
