SEGA® Corporation and Nintendo Co. Ltd. today made a historical announcement that two of the biggest icons in the entertainment industry, Mario™ and Sonic™, are joining forces to star in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Developed for the Wii™ video game system and the Nintendo DS™ system, this momentous agreement marks the first time these two renowned stars have appeared together in a game.

Published by SEGA across Europe and North America, and published by Nintendo in the Japanese market, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games will be available for Christmas 2007 and is licensed through a worldwide partnership with International Sports Multimedia (ISM), the exclusive interactive entertainment software licensee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, players will compete in events that take place in environments based on the official venues of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Using a supporting cast of characters from the amazing worlds of both Mario and Sonic, gamers will be able to compete as or against a range of lovable personalities including Mario, Sonic, Luigi™, Knuckles™, Yoshi®, Tails™ and more. Innovative usage of the Wii and DS control systems to maneuver a favourite character will allow players to race the likes of Mario and Sonic down the 100m track, engage in exhilarating rallies in table tennis and churn water in a swimming heat, all while competing for the much sought after gold medal.

“We are thrilled to partner with Nintendo and ISM on this groundbreaking title,” said Hisao Oguchi, President and Chief Operating Officer, SEGA Corporation. “For the first time, two of the world’s greatest games’ characters come together to compete in the world’s greatest sporting event and we couldn’t be more excited.”

“Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games,” says Shigeru Miyamoto, Senior Managing Director and General Manager, Entertainment Analysis and Development Division, Nintendo Co., Ltd.. “In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?”

“The Olympic Games represent the true spirit of competition and passion,” said Raymond Goldsmith, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ISM. “Bringing together intensely competitive and fun characters like Mario and Sonic in an Olympic setting helps showcase the sports of the Olympic Games in a new and compelling way for all generations.”

Heard this yesterday. If the game is done right this can be a great thing, but note that some of the newer games have been average. So who knows what could happen? I'm not getting my hopes up, but it might be worth picking up.

That was pretty awesome... I knew about the short cuts he used, I found them all myself when playing, but I didn't know about the glitches.

I guess theres a first time for everything. I never saw this coming. Ever since I can remember they were rivals and built to beat each other in the ratings wars. Whats weird is they still make good games, not like theyve slumped in any way.

that's freaking awesome

it's annoying how people who don't use emulators are accusing him of cheating. although he used a slowdown, there's no way anyone'd be able to do something like that without one. i congratulate him

He did cheat. I was like, this guy is almost as good as me! And then he did something, and I'm like... no way... he might be better than I am. Holy ****. And then I realized, he was using a modified emulator for recording that allows you to return by using save states. I mean, I can do all that stuff, but not in a row without ever messing up. I think Zilmar detailed which specific emulator he used, as I don't know, but as far as I'm concerned, that's cheating. As for slowdown, that all can be done without using it, and he probably didn't, but he may have, I can't say for sure.

I like Mupen's plugin customization. Have you suggested something similar to Zilmar?

Yes, but he didn't seem to pay too much attention to it. He seems to be a core-focused person, and, along with the rest of the Project64 team, not into third-party plugins. I don't think they'll implement that yet for a time.

If that's his view, then maybe he should collaborate with other people to make better plugins, so nobody NEEDs to use a different one. Video is Iffy, but I have to say, Azimer's is my favorite sound, no question, as is N Rage's Direct Input V2 2.00b. I know Video has that whole LLE/HLE dealie, so, maybe Zilmar should have one default HLE plugin, and one default LLE plugin?

No, I mean if Mario and Sonic were running in a straight line, and doing nothing else, then Sonic could go faster. Sonic is supposed to be faster than Mario. Mario wasn't designed to be really fast. Being fast is Sonic's thing.

Sonic

I think it was meant as Mario is more strategy while Sonic is more speed. Like Mario will use shortcuts to not have to go so fast while Sonic will take any route and still be fast.

If Mario does that buggy backwards flying he did up the stairs before the final boss, there's no way Sonic could catch up.

Still, up the stairs, straight or crooked line, Mario's *** flies faster.

Or Sonic could just use cheats/glitches as well and teleport to the finish line via the debug cheat, yo.

I showed that debug cheat to my friend, and he was like. O.o Holy ****. It was awesome.
