How do I "plug a controller in", so to speak, and play?

What emulator are you using?

./me kicks self in head.
Figured it out. 1964.
All the figures come up as white shadows. How do I fix this?

That depends on the rom you are trying to play. I recommend using Project 64. It works a lot better on most games then 1964. 1964 is better for some games, but very few. I would download and install project64 and try the rom on it. If that doesn't work then try using a different video plugin for either emulator.

Forgive the disagreement, but I think neither the ROM nor the emulator are factors of using a Nintendo 64 controller. All you need is a five star input plugin from NGEmu. Here you'll get the better input plugin that let's you use devices other than your keyboard, such as the mouse. It even lets you save settings for different users of the plugin! Or you could download Project64 like Jambog said and get the other well-working input plugin it comes with. But I do know one thing: All that matters is the input plugin. The only input plugin that doesn't let you use an N64 controller is that ****ty one-star one on this URL.

I don't know any URL letting you buy an N64 controller adapter. Jambog does, though.
***EDITED***
Oh, right. Just get the plugin.

Yes, the emulator has nothing to do with the controller input, my last statement was in reference to this one.

Got it (just so you know). I can be a hasty reader. Just get the plugin.

Alright, using 1964 (project 64 is retarded), but instead of white shadows, they are black blocks. Wanna help me out?
Link me up to a video plugin, I wanna get this working.
The ROM is Ogre battle 64.

I download all of my plugins from http://www.ngemu.com/n64/pj64.php?action=plugins. Yes, I know it says, "Project 64." Don't worry; they work.
*EDIT*
Oh...the two five star graphics plugins are GL64 and Rice's Video Plugin. I can't say which is better. If you want, jambo, tell him about how I got Rice's Video Plugin. But first, here's my link to GL64: http://www.ngemu.com/download.php?action=plugin&id=39.
But I think if you just try Project64 out with this problem, Jabo's plugin it comes with will solve your problems. Try PJ64, and then ***** at it.

How do I use the plug-in once I have DLed it?
Ironwolf

I did, and it merely shuts down the ROM after the first CS.
I think I can ***** at it :D

I can't say. I don't use 1964. I will download it myself and find out how. If and when I do, I'll edit this post and tell you how. In the meantime, why not try PJ64?
*EDIT*
Shuts down? Typical. PJ64 problems can be fixed, but I've found out. To change your 1964 plugins, use the Plug-ins/Change Plug-ins command (Ctrl+P also works).
Point proven. 1964 knows the right input plugin, at least, to use unlike PJ64.

I was talking about PJ64!
It just shuts down my ROM.
I'm itching to play this game!
And I got the video plug-in, put it in the plugins folder of PJ64, and it still uses black blocks.

Yes. I've edited the previous post. But I'll state it here as well: Press Ctrl+P to change your plugins in 1964. The long way is the Plug-ins/Change Plug-ins command.
*EDIT*
You got the video plugin as in you used the one PJ64 came with or you replace it with the one I gave you for download? One of them will work. If not, you may need Rice's Video plugin. In the meantime, I'll test your problem myself.

I changed the ROM settings to use rice 5.2, and it's still using white shadows (1964).
Why does ROM hate me?

5.2 is old. But forget about that. 1964's default plugin, Dadaelus, worked for me. Why didn't it for you? I'd say it's because the computer you're using does not meet the standards for emulating Nintendo 64 games. I just installed 1964, and the plugin at default it came with worked! Reinstall it if you can't find the plugin I'm speaking of. If it doesn't work, it's gotta be your computer. It must be. If you doubt that, tell me other N64 games you've played and if they were successful.

and about rice's... how do import it into 1964?
I was using Daedilus, and apparently that doesn't cut it.

the ONLY one I've tried to play was Ogre Battle. Perhaps the ROM isn't good enough?
I KNOW it isn't the computer. Brand new Alienware.

Jesus Christ, I don't know then. Try other games and tell me what happens. Read the Help Manual (F1) your emulator comes with. The instructions are smarter than I am. Read them. Look for troubleshooting or something like that.

Goddamn, why can't they just make it so that it runs like the good ol' 64.
Wouldn't have to resort to Emulators if a good soul on EBay was selling one.
-sigh-
