View Full Version : PS3 will cost between 613 and 736 USD...

In a radio interview with Generations Europe 1, George Fornay -- president of Sony Computer Entertainment France and vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe -- let a little something slip: the PlayStation 3 will cost between €499 and €599. That's somewhere between $613 to $736 in American dollars! He was sure to point out that while this might sound like a lot of money for a Game system, it was in fact cheap for a Blu-ray compatible playback system. Yay??
Since I can't seem to get the radio stream to work (and don't understand French if I could). The news comes to us (via Google's translation services) from Play France. Now, this could be a language barrier problem, but the untranslated page still reads "entre 499 euros et 599 euros donc."
Sony already told us it was going to be expensive and we already know the parts ain't cheap, so either Mr. Fornay is trying to set up an unrealistic price expectation -- only to have it shattered when the PS3 price is revealed to be $7.50 -- or he broke the first (and second) rules of the Sony executive's PS3 club: don't talk about the PS3. This thing is going to cost that much just like the PSP was gonna cost $500.

This is a bit too expensive for my tastes, I know better ways to spend my money, **** Sony and their PS3...

It will have to do a hell of a lot more than just have great graphics for me to shell out that kind of money for it. Besides. If the system cost that much how much will the games cost? 80 or 90 dollars? More?

My friend wants a PS3, so he might not be too happy...
Then again, he has a $3,000 pool table...
...and a $3,000 pool...

i completely agree. with a price point that steep, they had better have some of the most amzing exclusive games ever on a system, and other really kick ass reasons to buy it over the 360 (forget nintendo's gimmicky revolution, if they didnt have legions of rabid fanboys who masturbate to all things nintendo they would have imploded with the gamecube. "online is a flawed business model..." honestly). and from what i hear, exclusivity is heading towards extinction due to rising development costs. also, its supposed to be rather difficult to program for compared to the developer-friendly 360 and i believe that Blu-Ray is a good ways behind HD-DVD. if Sony wants to make this console competitive, they had better have a huge ace in the hole.

ya, but a you can't just ignore nintendo; they are still one of the 3 most popular game companies...even though they didn't BELIEVE in online (until they came out with DS Wi-Fi) I heard that the rev controller has a built in light gun (OOOO...)
isn't Blu-Ray massively ahead as the biggest disk-format storage available?
anyway, the PS3 may just drop in price like PSP did...
With the 25 GB Blu-Ray can hold, the games will probably either:
1. Have massively better graphics that the developers waste all the time and effort on
2. Have the same graphics as 360 and have really long games (can be good or bad)
3. waste a ton of space on the disk
How in the world can there be multi-platform games on these 3 consoles???

I was just thinking, what if Ur warrant is expired after a year and Ur 400 USD Blu-Ray unit breaks down and U gotta have it repaired on Ur own costs, buy a new PS3 or have it repaired for a few hundred of dollars??

i'm not ignoring nintendo, their first party games will probably continue to be great. but third party support has been kind of a problem recently, and i really dont think that they will compete with microsoft and sony. and i had heard that HD-DVD was ahead, that Blu-Ray wasn't fully developed yet, and that it was far more expensive. as for multi-platform games, they will still exist, they just will probably be more different amongst the 3 (or they will just develop for the lowest common denominator). i havent even heard that sony has finalized their hardware yet, and the 360's head start could allow Microsoft to have a large enough installed userbase to fend off the PS3.

I belive in Nintendo, they have the greatest games by far. And nintendo consoles are usually the cheapest. Besides, many great game developers (square, among others) are just amazed by the controllers.

Well Sony's systems (minus the sort of failure psp) have been all very successful so I'm sure even if the price is steep, people are still going to dish out the cash to get one. Look at all the systems that were released in the past: PS2 - started out around 400ish? and people bought this off of ebay for like double the cost in stores when first released? xbox 360 - premium retails 400, people buying it off of ebay for over a grand when it came out and this is with problems..
so the moral of the story is: people + new hardware + media advertisments + "Oh I gotta have it!" = wasting money on stuff you don't need but want.
So PS3's will probably be successful. Heck if the PS3 can whip out games like ps1 and ps2 has, it's got my vote.

just think of all the accessories you're probably gonna have to buy for it, and how expensive those will be. and how much are the games gonna cost, since they're on Blu-Ray discs?

it's suppose to be under $200 ish which is pretty insane. (if this site is reliable): http://www.kidzworld.com/site/p5654.htm
Heck for that price you can't afford to lose. If I end up hating, I'll just sell it with little loss.

Yes true it's a bit high, but it's not an official price yet. Am guessing it's gonna be around $400.00. But on the other hand if it is true, I'd dish out that money to buy it. I just know it's going to be worth it, Sony isn't stupid. They would realise they'd lose money if they made the price that high without giving the people what they want. I'll buy all 3, like I do all the time.:)

I agree, but regardless of price people are still going to buy it like crazy at launch. Look at xbox 360. People were paying more than double its price on ebay for a while. Talk about stupidity and some of the 360's had problems with cooling so the systems were over heating. PS3's are also going to be backwards compatible all the way to PS1 titles so that's a nice feature.

The games will be competitively priced im sure, sony cant compete if they bump the price of the games too much. suppossedly the price tag for the system is not so high for a blu ray technology machine with full support for HDTv.
On a different note, the backwards compatability rocks. My Ps2 **** the bed and i have tons of ps1 games. So id pay a little extra for that. Look at xbox 360 it only has some backwards compat.
ALso the xbox 360 seems like its only a little step up from the regular xbox. hopefully the PS3 will be more of a next gen system.
I cant wait to hear about the first twisted **** who decides to open up the PS3 and mod it. Granted there would be almost no way to get blu ray burners / blanks but i know somewhere some crazy ****head will pull it off !!!
SONY will not price the ps3 too much over 400, or even over 400; unless they want to lose the console war to the 360 and the revollution. The statement was taken back a while ago. It's not true anymore. The ps3 will be a lot cheaper.

Ha ha ha, like I said it's not an offical price yet.
All rumors and lies beyond lies. Will all know withing a month of it's release,
I remembered a huge rumor of how the PS2 was going to be around $600 as well.
Personally I really don't care until they get it shipped out with a price tag on it.

Sweet, lower the better :).. Keep on lowering it sony ;)
Now the thing is, will the first version of the ps3 be stable and worth buying? I know all the other systems in the past have had many different versions of the system released, I'm guessing because they improved or fixed something that was wrong, but regardless sony has always done this. I don't know about other game systems but hey I guess there's nothing wrong with improving on what's there :). (except that we have to go out and possibly buy another one...:( )

i don't know how sony can price it for anything less than 500. don't working blu-ray players cost like 3000 bucks right now?
as for its stability, i wouldnt buy it right away, remember the ps2? i think any new system will have bugs in it that need to be worked out. its extremely risky to buy the first generation of a console. plus, the more complicated the tech gets, the more things can break. i imagine that they could have cooling issues similar to the xbox with all the power that Cell processor probably draws, just for one example.

The first shipment will probably have lots of bugs, thats just how thinngs go. But I hope Sony won't make the system too buggy...

The cost of the system itself isn't what's bothering me, I wont be the one paying for it  , but the cost of
games is what im worried about.

Dude Youve Gotta Be Kidding Me!!! Whats So Special About The Ps3?
It's not special. It's just that it's new.
For me, I've had Sony PlayStations for ever since the very first one, so I'm gonna get the ps3 as well. It's also got great games, the trailers look awsome.

this radio interview was lost in translation... what the man said was, the ps3 could be priced between 500 and 1000 and it would still be an amazing price considering its bacward compatibility as a Blu ray player, the official price is now 400 dollars sony expects a massive loss on this system, but please don't name a thread that it will cost 600 dollars and misinform people

Just heard a news bit on the radio. PS3 announced for mid-November with a $499 price point for 20gig HD and $599 for "larger" HD, whatever that might be.

60 GB. now the question is, how much space does it take to store typical game saves and files? basically, is the 20 GB version a rip off or will it be sufficient for a good while?

I'm guessing sonys gonna take the approach of how xbox 360 did with the harddrive method, and I'm assuming you can't use IDE or Sata drives to replace those that come with it?

I forget who makes it, but someone is putting out a device that communicates between your 360 hdd and your PC. Very interesting.

Ahh... Very true. I agree wth Kameo, I'll be on the first reserve list for the revolution/wii; as i am a die-hard nintendo fan.
But I am glad to finally see the market go off in different directions with consoles, hopefully it will lead to an interesting game variety in the long run, besides, the gaming world is ready for something new, long overdue.

Wii all the way, its gonna be hella cheaper not to mention way cooler. Nintendo makes better products, they may have kiddie games, but their hardware is better. Look at the GC compared to PS2. supreme except for the lack of good games.
