Mine would have to be GTA III. It is so dang fun and can still entertain me after years.
The whole metal gear solid series. its so good. I can't wait for mgs4.
Gran Turismo is hella fun too.
My favorite game is Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo 64, play it on my gamecube all the time :D

on PC it would have to be the NWN series,
for console it could be any number of games heh i mean there are deffinately alot of phenominal ones final fantasy is worthy of mention but i don't think it deserves the the "best of all time reward". GTA3 is another one worthy of mention. i think i would have to go with the Dragon Quest series... haven't heard anyone singing the praises of dragon quest over final fantasy but for me its a more difficult game...... which makes it better for me.

My list:
1st: Valkyrie Profile (PSX)
THE most inovative RPG ever made. Great gameplay, great graphics and a fantastic soundtrack.
2rd: Gabriel Knight 1 and 2 (PC)
Since its hard for me to choose between these two games, I put them together. Anyway, they are my favorite adventures of all times.
3nd: Day of the Tentacle (PC)
No mather how many times I beat this game, I HAVE to play it again soon. One of the best adventure games ever!
4th: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PSX)
I don't think I need to comment something here.
5th: Might and Magic 3 (PC)
I love this non-linear PC RPG, even though its quite outdated nowdays. AND NO, I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT THE HEROES SERIES. i'M TALKING ABOUT THE FIRST PERSON RPG SERIES.
6th: Woodruff and the Shnible of Azimuff
I laugh sooo hard the first time I played this game... And I still laugh when I replay it nowdays...
7th: Crusader: No Regret (PC)
Even nowdays it figures as one of the best action games ever. A must play!
8th: King's Quest 6 (PC)
The only non-childish game on the King's Quest series, and its the best one IMHO.
9th: Final Fantasy VIII (PSX)
I don't know why most ppl don't like it, but its my favorite FF.
10th: Breath of Fire 3 (PSX)
Ok, maybe the storyline and the game system are lame, but the game is fun nonetheless. And there's so many diferent things to do, like fishing, building the fairy world, etc.
Honorable mentions:
-Harvest Moon: BTN (PSX) = Would be on the 11th place. Great game to play forever.
-The Shining Force games = Would be on a high place on my list too. I love SF games, specially the second one on the Genesis and SF CD on the sega CD.
-Might and Magic: World of Xeen (PC) = You get this game if you install MM4 and MM5 on the same folder. Its the second best PC RPG IMHO, and its one of the longest games EVER!!!
-The Space Quest games = Great humorous adventure games, for the ones that don't know. There are 6 games on the series. My fave is SQ3.
-Quest for Glory series = Feels like Adventure/RPG hybrid. Great series made by sierra.
-Xenogears = The best storyline ever on a game. Too bad the game itself is a bit boring...
-Doom = The original Doom and Doom 2 should also be mentioned here, as I still play them from time to time. They are and will always be great!!

Xenogears is probably the most in-depth rpg I have ever played, the story is soo freakin complex but good, the musical score is top notch. The graphics were so-so but the battle system, man completely interesting and fun! This would defenitly be one of my top fav games of all time.
Oh yea.. let's not forget some good ol' classics like Double Dragon, Rastan, UN Squadron (best side-scroll shooter ever!), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Chase H.Q.. man forget it, I'll stop there.. this list could go on forever.

Man oh man I wana get into the Final Fantasy series but I have NO IDEA how to play that game. I wana try FF7 but again, what in gods name do I do?
The only RPG game I beat without ANY help what so ever was Metriod II Return of Samus.
Next was Legend of Zelda, Ocerana of Time, but I had help;)

Final Fantasy 7 is pretty straight forward. The game teaches you. You would only need a strategy guide if you want to get all the items and beat the optional super bosses.

It seems we are in the same boat. Because I hear so much about Final Fantasy from my best friends. Like Alex and Jared are so into Final Fantasy 7 and 8 yet every time I play the Final Fantasy games I am sooo lost. If I could somehow get the hang of even one I would know what all the fuss is about and be able to tell why Final Fantasy is ranked so high. Not saying it sucks, but it is one of those series that I ask myself "Why is it ranked so high?" yet all the time that I play them am stuck on controls and such. Once I do, then I will be able to evaluate it without making any blind claims. I like to scout my competition and be able to form a non biased opinion before I start debating on which one is the best and such.

5. Tales of Phantasia. If you love action RPGs and haven't played this, well, then you really don't love action RPGs. Get it now!
4. Madden football. Its lost some of its charm over the years because they have sort of let it stagnate but its still the best football game in town. (until you go online. Online Madden sucks ) Hopefully 2K will make EA sit up and take notice this year.
3. Zelda OOC. No need to say more than the title of this one.
2. Final Fantasy III/VI. Fantastic story with some of the best characters ever in a game and great game play. Who could ask for more out of an RPG?
1. Doom PSX. I've played this game on all consols and PC and its the "Music"
of the PSX version that makes it my favorite version. Sure Doom 3 kicks major *** but in a deserted island senario I'll take the original ported to PSX. Those crying babies freaked me out the first time I played this game. And still do.
Manhunt gets an honorable mention. Hopefuly Manhunt 2 fixes the little things that irked me about the game and gives us an online option.

OK, I have tried Tales of Phantasia, maybe because you've mentioned so many times how awesomely awesome it is, but I demand an explanation. Just WHAT is it that makes that game so good? The terrible controls completely ruins the game!
I know it's a matter of opinion, but I'd want to see what you find so good about that game...

ff7 is not even that hard...it set the benchmark for modern rpg systems and was easy enough for a child to play, but hard enough for an avid rpg-er to enjoy...(quick fact...) i beat the entire game in it's entirety, in about 300 hours...i wouldn't ask for a single minute of that time back

Hard enough? Final Fantasy VII's biggest flaw was being far too easy, second biggest flaw was too much bullsh*t between the fighting.

by hard, i meant beating all the weapons and collecting all the materia while getting everybody's limit breaks....not by gameplay...and to conclude, all the random fights really p!ssed me off..

I know it's a matter of opinion, but I'd want to see what you find so good about that game...
1. The story. This game starts out in a big dramatic way and just keeps getting better with a great back story to set up a history of the world and why these things have to be done. When I beat Phantasia I had a great sense of accomplishment. Not because I struggled through and churned out another game but because I actually got drawn into the plot and still cared about what was happening at the end just the same as I did in the beginning. Thats rare for me.
2. The battle system is fun. I like the way you can do different attacks with the main character and set up the other characters battle actions to fit the situations. It might not be too good on a keyboard but I wouldn't know. I use a controller.
As much as I love the SNES FF's and similar RPG's its a nice change from just hit a button, choose an option and then just hit another button and then watch and wait to do it over again with some one else.
I love those games and play the hell out of them but sometimes you need a change of pace you know? This is a nice change.
3. The graphics and sound. I think that this is one of the best looking games of the Era. Good animation for the characters and foes. The towns and world map look great and the water, fish and birds give a nice background. The music, to me, isn't the greatest but I love the Japanese yells and chants when your fighting. I don't know what they are saying but it sure sounds cool.
Usually when someone demands something from me I'll just say shove off or ignore them. But I really think if you gave this little gem another chance you would really like it. Especially the original Japanese translated version on the SNES.

Thank you for your reply. I do plan on giving ToP another chance at some point, but some other games have higher priority at the moment.
I agree with you on some points, the story was all right, or maybe better than all right. The graphics were excellent, I loved seeing my reflection when walking near water and other details like those. I also enjoyed the japanese shouts when attacking and such, especially since many of them, by coincidence, sounded like swedish (for an example, one of the yells used by the main character - forgot his name, was it Cless? - sounded exactly like "Akta på dig" which means "Get out of the way")
The soundtrack was all right, though I've heard better.
However, it is the battle system that ruins my gameplay experience completely. It was alright in the beginning, when you only controlled Cless or whatever his name was, and maybe one more character. But when you get a full party of four characters, battles become too messy with your party member's spellcasting constantly interrupting you.
However, the biggest problem I found with the battle system, was fighting flying enemies. For some strange reason, it is impossible for Cless to do a jump attack without charging, and for some even stranger reason, it is impossible to run when moving away from the enemy, appearently you can only run when attacking the enemy. To attack a flying enemy, you have to move away from them so you can charge before you attack, but putting that distance between Cless and the enemy is extremely annoying when you can't run away from the enemy, only move very slowly.
Elric
06-26-2007, 06:52 PM
You can run anytime you want with Cless after you get the Jet Boots. Just hold down a direction and press the B button. You can also set the way the NPCs attack and cast magic so they aren't using up all of their points in just a couple of battles.
I also like how you absolutely have to have certain accessories to prevent a lot of the elemental damage later on in the game and all of the rare items that you have to find.
The PSX version was supposedly updated with some extras and changes so maybe you would like that version better. I've never played that one myself as I am think that the SNES version is great as is.
Actually, the more I think about it there are quite a few techniques and combos to attack flying enemies that you get throughout the game.
