 Laterly i have noticed that some times when i Google something on the results page beneath the site name the address will say "WWW2" then the name and then the ".COM" part. So here is my Question, Does that "WWW2" thing have something to do with "Internet 2" ???

according to Fid it just a different domain thingy or something and apparently any site owner could change the 'www' to somehting like 'www2' or w/e if they knew how to.

I'm sure once Fid comes onto CoolROM to do his runs he'll explain in better and greater detail

It's just a subdomain. It's usually used to accommodate overflow from their "main" site.

For instance, while coolrom has coolrom.com/forums/ for its forums, someone else might put the forums in forums.coolrom.com . So, let's say www.example.com would be the main site. Say you have all the files and directories for a set of forums. If you want to add other things, it can be a pain getting them lost in the forum directories, and you may not want to try to find only the forum stuff and move it into its own directory, plus, you run the risk of alienating users who have it bookmarked.

So, you can name new subdomains www2, www3, or whatever, to fill in for the extra space you need. Typically though, people name their subdomains something, as specific numbers can be harder to remember (which is why we have domain names instead of just using IPs in the first place), and it's just plain lazy.

Would you rather go to forums.example.com , or would you rather go to www2.example.com ? One makes it clear where you're going, and is easier to remember.

Hope that helps. =]
