ROMs. Nintendo 64 games? ROMs. NES? ROMs. SNES? ROMs. Why do you think this website is titled 'CoolROM.com'? All files emulated by any console emulator are ROMs, and are usually, to compress highly unnecessary bytes, stored in ZIP archive files.

WRONGO! Consoles that utilize compact disc technology's game files are ISO's, not ROMs. Some sites use more effective compression methods such as .rar and .7z, but since this will cause mass confusion and billions of threads titles "How do you use teh .7z/.rar/etc." most sites use the more common .zip type of compression. An alternative is using self-extracting rar archives, which do not require WinRAR to unpack, but I have only seen this on one site. It is probably too much work to make such archives.

Yes, well I did say 'usually'. Never use RAR compression. I've compared it to ZIP compression, which is far better. Any website that uses RAR compression is an...unexplainable word. Besides, most users don't have WinRAR, but they have WinZIP. Compression is not a concern like actually being able to extract the goddamn contents. I've seen PCs for download with 250 GB disk space and have heard of some with 1 TB of disk space. RAR compression, besides the fact that it's weaker and harder to open, is just...not worth it.

actually, WinRAR compresses files up to 10% better than any other compression program thingie. WinRAR is easy and fun to use for me...i've grown attached to it

Hmm...I take one thing back. I've tried what you said, and WinRAR does seem to have compressed 18 KB to 17 KB. Only 1 KB less, though, and many users don't have WinRAR. Consider yourself lucky, I guess. For this format is better, except for one area where I could have sword ZIP format did better on compressing J-Chess, but whatever.

goodness gracious! you use winRAR to compress huge files! You can also use winRAR to separate files into parts, which is handy for upload sites with lmits on size
