First of all. 1.5 is currently the only good way to run : Emulators , ISO's , ROMS, and Homebrew.
There is a slight downfall to having 1.5 . The newer games including Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories must have 2.0 to play.
The reason for this is 2.0 supports codecs that were written into the game that are not supported on 1.5.
So, The reason to update is to play the newer games becuase currently there is no version changer that works with Grand Theft Auto or Socom : Fireteam Bravo.
Maybe in time we will see game loaders but to this moment the ONLY way to play those two games is to update to 2.0
Downgrading
At first people who thought they had 2.0 were doomed never to play emulators of homebrew again. That all changed when MPH launched the first downgrader. the allowed any psp with 2.0 firmware to be downgraded to 1.5.
The reason why people want to to it? They want to play emulators of : Nes , Snes , Gameboy , Atari and more. Also they like to play homebrew games which eager programmers write for the general public. And the sick truth is that people want to play ISOs. It is illegal and I do not support it.
Well that sums up our What Can Be Gained From Updating and Downgrading Section.

[2] The Psp Terms Guide
I have seen a lot of confusion about the terms of the psp. So to end all questions please read below
USB Cable - The Universal Serial Bus cable is the only cable that allows you to transfer files from your Computer to your Psp. The Nessacary size is Mini B. Meaning The A end is regular size and the B end is the side that fits the port in the top of your Psp and other small devices.
Firmware - The short form of this term is FW. Firmware is essentially the software that allows the psp to run. Think of it as Windows for your psp. The different Firmware Versions are : 1.0 and 1.5 which can run Eboots , 1.51 , 1.52 , 2.0 which can run limited Eboots. 2.1, 2.5 , and 2.6
Brick - A brick is essentially a psp without properly functioning Firmware or FW. Bricking is often acheived by turning off the psp during updating or using unsafe downgraders. When you have "Bricked" your psp it will not turn on and becomes completly useless for the time...DO NOT DESTROY! .
Eboots - Eboots are what the files that allow homebrew program and emulators to run. The reason for the file name to me is a mystery. But when you read about Eboots it essentially means homebrew programs.
Updating - Updating your Firmware is changing the software on your psp to the newest version possible. This is usually done to have access to the newest games or the sub-par Web Browser. It is unadvised to update any further than 2.0 hence there is no downgrader past 2.0. Be forewarned, as of this moment there is no looking back after 2.0 .
Downgrading and the Downgrader - To the relief of many gamers unhappy with the features of 2.0 came the downgrader. Downgrading is to change the Firmware to a earlier version then you currently have. Do downgrade you need to have 2.0 and you can only downgrade to 1.5 . Bricking has been a result of recklessness with the downgrader. If you are to use it be very carefull you do not want a new paper weight.
These are the terms that are necessary to the downgrading and updating

A rather small section because it is rather basic. Although it can be misunderstood. The following are the names of folders and directories on the Memory Stick and what there functions are.
ROOT - Think of ROOT as the very top. Before you go digging into the other folders you have the ROOT. To display the ROOT click on the Removable Disk that is your psp under My Computer. In this walkthrough I will call the drive E: . In the ROOT of E: you should a folder named pp. If you have put movies on your psp you will also see a folder named MP_ROOT .
PHOTO - The Photo folder is where you store your photos on your psp. Most image formats are supported on your psp. The Photo folder is very key in the downgrader
SAVEDATA - The Savedata folder is the folder where all your gamesaves are stored when you play a UMD game. I recommend backing this up on a routine basis.
GAME - Ahh the game folder... The most essential for unlocking the psps full power. Often you will see programs with folders that are called "example" and "example%" I do not know the reason for this and do not question it. This is where you will be placing all your emulators and other Eboots.
Well that's all for the folders... not very complicated, I am sure you will be used to it in no time.
IF YOU DO NOT SEE THESE FOLDERS YOU NEED TO FORMAT YOUR MEMORY STICK UNDER SYSTEM SETTINGS

You can't update or downgrade without resources. I will tell you everything you need to get working. I also recommend visiting www.psp-hacks.com . It is the website that I trust for all my Eboots and have never had a problem with any of there downloads.
Updating :
Updating is rather basic in contrast to downgrading.
What you will need :
The Eboot of the Firmware update - you want. This can be obtained at http://www.psp-hacks.com/category/10
A USB Mini B Cable - These can be obtained at your local Electronics Shop or Gaming Store. I reccomend a place like : Best Buy , or Future Shop.
Battery Life of 70%+ - Due to the danger of power failure you need a high amount of battery power to start the update.
An External Power Source - Incase you battery falls out or fails you MUST have an external power source. I am not sure if you can use a USB charger if you made one. But it can be the charger it came with or a car adapter if you are on the go.
Downgrading
Downgrading is very risky and has bricked some psps in the past. I do not accept responsibility for damaged or malfunctioning psps. Use at own risk!
What you will need :
The MPH Downgrader - The lovely fellows at MPH was nice enought to provide a free downgrader for the world of disapointed 2.0 users. It is available at http://www.psp-hacks.com/category/10 .
A lot of focus - Due to the nature of over-riding the security features of the psps Firmware, you should have lots of focus and pay attention to the instructions.
A Brave Heart - It took me a while to gain the courage to try this downgrader. It's not something to be treated lightly. There is no going back after you attempt it. While the risk rate is low, the losings are devestating. Think about this before you go through with it.
[5] Updating Walkthrough
You should already have the resources needed to update.
1) - Connect your USB Mini B cable to your psp and select USB connection under Settings.
2) - Go to My Computer and select the removable disk that is your psp.
3) - Click on the PSP folder . It should open up E:/psp .
4) - Open up E:/psp/game .
5) - Use Winzip or Winrar to extract the downloaded eboot from www.psp-hacks.com .
6) - In E:/psp/game create a new folder called UPDATE . This folder HAS to be in caps. After creating the folder , open it up. Your directory now should be E:/psp/game/UPDATE .
7) - Copy and paste the Eboot.pbp file into the newly created UPDATE folder. When the transfer is complete disconnect the psp from your computer.
8) - If you have a charged psp and access to an external power source then go scroll over to game and select Memory Stick.
