I don't know of anyone who has managed to create a ROM from a Gamecube Disc, but my theory is as follows:

The disc drive from the Gamecube must be modified to communicate with a PC, for example attatching a SATA interface and forcing it to mimic a normal CD Drive (This would be difficult to achieve) From there, the data from the GC Disc can be read and stored on the computer hard drive. An emulator must then be able to read the GC Disc image and interpret the game data.

I believe a project of this scale is way beyond my technical expertise.

Given from a disk...if it's any matter Microsoft burned their game discs in reverse, so you need backwards compatibility. Then again it makes sense that wouldn't matter?

Wouldn't an emulator be able to just read the disc from a disc drive ?

The hardware may do that for the emulator and send the contents of the disc to the software that is the emulator, ya know, scratch my back and I'll scratch yours, sorta?
