View Full Version : What is the Theory about the Universe's end?

What do scientists think the end of the Universe will be? I just want to know, I've never heard any speculation about the subject.

While reading about the theories into how it was created or how it will end I remember reading about a repetitive "oscillating" theory in that the boundaries of what we call the universe (which do exist before what we imagine infinity) will not only shrink into the center that holds the sun but re-expand--possibly with a new 'planetary' system in the process. This merged both the beginning and terminal theories of the universe's formation past-future.
At the very least we should have heard that the Sun will eventually die out in unforseen time (nothing calculated to recent).

Thats the theory that our universe pulsates, some don't believe this.
Iconoclast

aye that's why it's a theory
Doregushin

I was asking about its end.
Most scientists agree the Big Bang is what occured.
If the Universe had a beginning, whats the end?

As you can see I have described two interposing of the other theories, and if they are both theories there is no law to silence them.
In which case you are asking for law. You have not defined a theory.
You may not have seen debate because it is not a field of contradiction--not automatically ruling out multiple probabilities.

There is evidence to disprove the Oscillating(sp?) theory, for if the universe was pulsating, the stars would be slowing down, but they're not. In fact, they're going faster.
Iconoclast
01-14-2009, 07:56 PM
In either the expansion or contraction phase may the stars slow down?

Both, so I hear.

I think the closest guess about the sun is 5000 years from now, but most say around 30 million to 5 billion years from now.
I was asking about its end.

Recreation is what i think, but scientifically it's pretty uniform that what will happen to the universe is eventual heat death, which means eventually all suns and light will dissipate, thus resulting in a endless void of darkness.

Okay first off the sun is due to last another 4 to 5 billion years. Hopefully the sun does not speed up it,s consumpion of nuclear fuel.
Second the end of the universe there are two mane theories about this either the universe will stop expanding and begin to contarct in on itself until all matter is compress to single central point. Or the universe will expand so much that all matter in universe will be sterched so thin no new stars or planets will be born and the universe will be quite and dark full of black holes and radation. It is like the saying goes "what has a begining must have a end" in other words this universe will not last forever.

There are two ways the universe could end. Dark matter and Dark energy. They say that these two forces are conflicting to hold us in place in the universe. Dark matter and dark energy are both in balance at the moment, But they say that dark matter is slowly taking over. If dark matter wipes out dark energy then the universe will drift apart and we would all freeze. Dark energy takes over then we would all collide in one massive explosion of doom!

in theory the Universe is ever expanding, never technically ending but getting to a point unsubstainable to life as we know it to co-exist.
Maybe if we put Mariachi Bands on MTV, We would see Scene Kids walking around the Malls in Sombreros? :D

Here is a pretty fun read (Or chilling?) of the end of the Universe- If it could be called such.
http://www.universetoday.com/2007/07/25/the-end-of-everything/
Currently, we are still formulating, observing and testing theories; As new information comes available, we may be able to lend a much higher degree of accuracy to these claims.
This theory is in opposition to the pulsating or Big Crunch idea- but it bears a lot of resemblance to what several other posters outlined.
It extends pretty far into the future...
But at this point, I might tip my hat to Grethum, if he's around, to extrapolate on the Dark Matter/ Dark Energy balance he spoke of.
Dark Matter and Dark energy, at the present time, are more hypothesis than they are theory.
You see, the Galaxies as measured weigh a great deal more than they are expected to from observing the visible spectrum. This strongly suggest that there is matter within each galaxy that adds mass but is not currently detectable.
So "Dark Matter" is the "Filler", you might say - to account for that added mass.
It's similar for Dark Energy and from a scientific point of view- Very exciting ground. Because Dark Matter and Dark energy could both turn out to be barking up the wrong tree. Until our observation improves, it's only our best guess.
But letting the imagination wander for a moment- What an amazing thing it would be to find that Dark Matter Hypothesis is incorrect and it was something entirely different that accounts for the mass differential of galaxy/ Galaxy clusters that we observe.
It's a riddle with which I eagerly await new evidence to crop up and supply us with clues.

No.
In short; Black Holes will not kill the Universe.
Black Holes are a product, nothing more. A black Hole has the same gravity field as the star that collapsed into it, as well. They are not cosmic hoovers.
The difference with a Black Hole is that the radius of the surface is now much much closer to the center of mass, allowing (inverse square law) a body of mass to travel that much closer to the center of mass.
So objects will orbit Black Holes in the same manner they do stars. Only they won't get light from them.

If I am missing a joke or something- I apologize...
But the OP refers to Mainstream Scientific Theory on the subject. If I miss a joke, that's understandable. But if someone asserts something that is not mainstream Scientific Theory regarding the question asked- I WILL correct it.
I ignored the rather... strange... postulation that the Sun was going out in 5,000 years... http://l.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/29.gif

Clearly I will be ignorant about humorous jokes made before my time.
However, telling me to "be quiet" defeats the purpose. This thread, as meant to be a discussion should then require informed input. If you tell people who offer informed input to be quiet and then make the claim that they are trying to intellectually compete- all you are doing is trying to silence people you personally disagree with.
Unless you can say that you're only trying to show your penis size when you correct someone about how to use a rom?

I don't joke on average.
If you actually had an intent to discuss it i'd be fine with it, but your intent is to push your views on others, which is not a discussion, it's an argument.
The penis size thing is basically me saying your trying to be more elite than others, saying "your right and everyone else is wrong", basically this is a basic, pathetic argument, and as i said before, unless your going to discuss instead of try to force your opinion, then be quiet.

It is not my views.
I was discussing it quite clearly. This is not a non falsifiable subject.
Your accusation is about as accurate as if someone here said water is dry and I responded that it's actually wet. For you to interject and claim I am forcing my views on others is ridiculous and absurd.
Views have a place in opinions and such.
It's is not a matter of My Personal Belief of faith that water is wet. That observational evidence describes an accurate model.
Falsifiable evidence is not a "view."
Opinions about non falsifiable things- like Invisible Elves would be a a View.

I have been discussing it until you attacked me with a lot of accusations and insults.
I countered your claim and asked for evidence. For the fifth time now, you have failed to produce evidence to support your claim and have resorted to using insult and accusation.
Then you try to claim that I am picking a fight?
Check your own behavior first.
I am not forcing my views. I am discussing what the evidence supports in a rational manner. If you cannot, personally, handle that; Then I suggest that you do not respond to my posts and try to cool off before addressing me.
And if I am correct about something and you are incorrect, as a grown man you will have to just learn how to deal with that in the same manner that I must when it happens to me. It's much more productive than your insults and accusations, which are growing very tiresome.
ETA: Tatsuya, your accusations make no sense- but you have repeatedly demonstrated and even stated clearly that you dislike science and scientific methodology. You are attempting to silence me, rather than have to see science spoken about on the board.

Tatsuya is a grown man and he is responsible for his own behavior.
Who you back up is irrelevant to me. I am not here to disrupt someones friendship. That is not a relevant issue for the topic.
If you choose to "back up Tatsuya" even when his behavior is bad- that's fine. I can rationally defend myself from his attacks along with yours, too, if you would like to back him up.
I stand accused and attacked by someone that refuses to support his accusations, calls anything he dislikes wrong and continually claims that science is a farce.
The computer he's enjoying the ability to do so demonstrates that scientific properties are not a farce. His claims are misleading at best.
If he cannot control his own behavior when a poster on the forum discusses science in a rational manner- that is his personal problem and I am NOT to be held accountable for it.
