Default R4 Unit Suggestions

As of right now, I currently have the itouch2 for my DSi. For one, I don't like lugging around my 100+ games nor do I prefer breaking the plastic seals on my game cases.

Well, I've currently been having some issues with my itouch2 where the DSi is unable to read it correctly. I double checked the connectors inside my DSi and they are all currently still in the shape they should be. The itouch2's connectors are all correct as well as where my microsd spot is as well. In addition, the microsd pens are correct as well.

So, here comes the final solution. I was wondering some people's suggestions on what R4 unit to buy. I just believe that maybe it's just from the wear and tear that it has gone through on the trips the wife and I have been on. (She gets the laptop and I get the DSi)

First off, don't go with R4. They have since been discontinued and the ones that you do find on the web are most likely poorly made knockoffs.
Instead, go with the cyclods. I know it may be a bit pricey (49.99), but it is worth it. I have had mine for about a year and I have had no problems, and all roms work like a charm. I also have a R4SDHC, and it works okay; but you need to put it in your DS with a thin sheet of paper so the pins align properly, which is quite annoying. Go for the CycloDS.

Ahh, the DSi. Have you updated the DSi's firmware lately? Supposedly the 1.4 Japanese disables flashcart usage (at least the current coding it uses not sure about the latest US update). Apparently the iTouch2 isn't capable of updating it's bootstrap (the code written into the flashcart-not your micro sd-that lets it load in the ds, instead of an error message) I'd recommend a flashcart that allows you to flash the bootstrap, bypassing the blockage in future DSi firmware updates. The Acekard2i and the Supercard DSONEi are the only cards off-hand that I KNOW can do this (in fact, the Supercard DSONEi comes with a USB flash dongle, in case you don't have a DSlite or DSphat to flash your card on).

I've got the Acekard2i and like it because of it's menu system (which is fast), its ROM and hombrew compatibility (especially with the AKAIO firmware), and the price (I've found them online for as little as $13). However the case is a bit flimsy.

The SC DSONEi seems a bit sturdier, has Real Time Save (which allows you to save DS Roms at any point during gameplay) multimedia support and the aforementioned USB flash dongle, and is still only running $21 or so at DealExtreme. Again though, the menu and file system are based on an old version of Moonshell and is apparently really slow. The micro sd fits in the side of the cartridge which is inconvenient. And... it's white which looks kinda fugly unless you've got one of the newer white DSi.

Again though, these are the only two cards with up-datable bootstraps that I KNOW OF. I'm sure someone will feel more than free to correct me if I'm wrong. Good luck and happy playing!
