Thumbs up High-Resolution Texture Packs

High-resolution texture packages are collections of textures, the images used in a ROM file, that are used to replace the original game's graphics with the author's.

Example:

Before: http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q...fTimeEM3V1.jpg
After: http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q...DOFZELDA-1.jpg

If you want to transform the way your games look as shown above with the Zelda OOT example, you will need only two things:
  1. Rice's Video Plugin, which can be downloaded from here.
  2. The hi-res texture 'mod' for the game to be loaded using the plugin.
A list of hi-res texture mods available: (If you want screenshots, they're in the download thread.)How to load them using Rice's Video Plugin 6.1.1:
  1. Download the texture pack to Emulator\Plugin\HiRes_Texture\InternalROMName. The typical example would be C:\Program Files\Project64 1.6\Plugin\HiRes_Texture\THE LEGEND OF ZELDA, in the case of Zelda OOT. The internal ROM name of Zelda OOT is THE LEGEND OF ZELDA, therefore, the plugin loads the textures from that folder.
  2. Choose Rice's Video Plugin 6.1.1 beta 10 as your graphics plugin. Instructions for changing your graphics plugin are provided with the download link for the plugin above.
  3. Open the plugin configuration dialoge for the plugin.
  4. Turn on the "Load hi-res texutures if available" option from the Texture Filters tab in the plugin configuration. Some visual aid to show what I mean:

Then you're ready. Load the game in your emulator. Needless to say, you will definitely notice whether or not it worked by looking at the game.

Thread updated. Texture mod for Banjo-Kazooie has been added.

Since I'm not much of a hi-res person--meaning, I don't usually use high-resolution emulation when playing games--I haven't taken any screenshots yet. Perhaps you, Kirsdarke, would like to do the screenshot-taking? Also, somebody's gotta Google for newly-released mods. I can do both of these things, if you want.

Added the following INI configuration in plugin download:
  • Banjo-Kazooie
    • Europe (E)
    • Japan (J)
    • United States (U)
  • Legend of Zelda, The: Ocarina of Time
    • Europe (E)
    • Europe - Master Quest (E)
    • Japan (J)
    • United States (U) - already exists/no change
Games should look better now.

The glitches I was able to fix in Banjo-Kazooie via the INI change:
  1. Enabled frame buffer attempts to try to render the pause screen and Bottles' secret jigsaw challenges.
  2. Smoke/alpha issues
  3. Slight frame update issues
What I could not accomplish/fix:
  1. Jigsaw challenge display screen smoke
  2. Perfect frame buffer-texture-rendering
  3. Textural update issues
Even so, the hi-res still makes it look great. Also, screenshots for Banjo-Kazooie have been added.

Default Legend of Zelda, The: Majora's Mask

Added mod for Zelda MM. Probably the most difficult game I ever had to witness myself writing an INI confuration entry for, there are still a couple remaining issues:
  1. Motion blur unsupported
  2. Frame buffer effect unsupported during subscreen pause
Both of these issues CAN be fixed by enabling what is called frame buffer emulation, but, unfortunately, the cost of speed is so high, that it is very likely that for the average system, the low speed just won't be worth it to the point where the game becomes unplayable.

If you think I'm wrong, go ahead and see for yourself. Open your plugin configuration, go to the Default Game Options tab, and set "N64 Frame Buffer Emulation" option to "Basic Framebuffer," which is the option that fixes these issues that costs the least amount of speed. Motion blur and pause/frame buffer effects will show up in the game now, but your system may experience emulation slowdown in the following areas:
  • When Link is putting on or removing one of the four transformation masks
  • The final battle arena where you fight Majora's Mask
  • The game intro where Majora's Mask zooms in and out and the Happy Mask Man giggles in possession of the mask
  • When Sharp is doing several vertical 360s after playing the Song of Storms
  • The moon, when Link is running and motion blur is used
  • Cinematic cutscenes where Link heals characters with the Song of Healing
  • Probably other areas that I have forgotten.

Holy ****. I just found out that there were some invisible threads that I could not normally see. I don't know what that is about, but I found several other hi-res mods as well. Look at KD's post, all those new hi-res I linked to.

This is going to take me all day to catch up with all of this (configuring, screenshots, etc.). There are actually TWO fiercly decent SM 64 hi-res mods, so I cannot link to just one of them. Instead, I am going to merge them both into one, and upload it within my next post.

The INI configuration and screenshots, however, will have to come last.

I've got Super Mario 64 hi-res uploaded here.

http://www.filesend.net/download.php...fc66f3229ac6d2

Again, this is a combination of two texture packs:
  1. Pack 1
    • cloudscapes: Environmental texturing
    • _pm_: Additional environmental texturing
  2. Pack 2
    • John Doe: GUI texturing
This thing looks even better than the one for Zelda OOT.

The next time I reply to this thread, all screenshots will be available, all games configured for Rice's, and any new hi-res I will find (unlikely) will be uploaded.

I've decided to remove the screenshots. Complete waste of my time. If you want screenshots, click on the damn link for the game, and you'll get a bunch of them in the thread author's posts.

Issues support has also been dropped. (Removed 'Issues.html')

Added high-resolution texture packs for the following games:
  • Diddy Kong Racing by _pm_
  • GoldenEye 007 by Kerber2k
  • Mario Kart 64 by Leonardo20 (Apparently, this guy did nothing special. I'm looking for a better hi-res for the game in the meantime.)
  • Monopoly by krhyluv
  • Starfox 64 by Kid A
  • Super Mario 64 by cloudscapes, _pm_, and John Doe
  • Virtual Chess 64
  • Wave Race 64 by The Dave
  • WWF No Mercy by alanchiz
Added INI configuration for the following:
  • Diddy Kong Racing
    • Europe (E)
    • Japan (J)
    • United States (U)
  • GoldenEye 007
    • Europe (E)
    • Japan (J)
    • United States (U)
  • Mario Kart 64
    • Europe (E)
    • Japan (J)
    • United States (U)
  • Monopoly
    • United States (U)
  • Star Fox 64
    • Europe (E)
    • Japan (J)
    • PAL (A)
    • United States (U)
  • Super Mario 64
    • Europe (E)
    • Japan (J)
    • United States (U)
  • Virtual Chess 64
    • Europe (E)
    • United States (U)
  • Wave Race 64
    • Europe (E)
    • Japan (J) {d691915c06c30ab3-4a}
    • Japan (J) {e2f35d53f1899760-4a}
    • United States (U)
  • WWF No Mercy
    • Europe (E)
    • United States (U)
Off-topic rant: The whole PAL (A) - NTSC (PD) thing is just retarded. Who the hell wants 50 frames per second?
